SLU’s Department of Plant Breeding (VF), located in Alnarp (near Lund and Malmö, in Skåne, southern Sweden), focuses on research, education and innovation work of strategic importance for a sustainable and profitable cultivation of crops for production of plant-based food, feed and industrial products in a changing climate.  The Department is recognized as a multidisciplinary, innovative, and creative research institute working on current and future challenges. It comprises about 100 staff and co-workers that includes professors, docents, researchers, postdocs, PhD-students and support staff and is organized in three divisions, namely, Plant Breeding, Plant Biotechnology, and Plant Product Quality. The research efforts include strategic as well as applied research. VF uses a wide range of techniques –from field experiments and characterisation of agricultural biodiversity to genetics, genomics, biotechnology, biochemistry, physical chemistry, physiology, and modelling. As an integral part of the activities, the department also run two public plant breeding programs in apples and potatoes.

 We are now looking for an engaged and meticulous person as research assistant for our Plant Biotechnology division.

Duties:

The person we are looking for will perform and develop experimental work in various research projects. The tasks will be of a varying nature, and include plant tissue culture, molecular biology methods and metabolic analysis. The daily work will involve participation in the development and execution of genome editing and transformation of plants. In addition to this also molecular biology methods as PCR, qPCR, treatment of nucleotide sequences, marker and fragment analyzes and other existing analytical methods. Certain tasks in greenhouse and fieldwork may be included in the employment.

Qualifications:

A candidate for the employment must have an education as a biomedical analyst or an education in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or equivalent at least on bachelor’s level. Experience of practical work in molecular biology, biochemistry and / or tissue culture is an advantage. The applicant must be service-oriented and great emphasis will be placed on the candidate’s analytical ability, flexibility, independence and ability to work in collaboration. We value work experience of responsibility for technical equipment and organisational and ordering procedures. Ability to communicate in Swedish and excellent spoken and written English are required.
