The Department of Periodontology is located at the Institute of Odontology at the Faculty of Medicine at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

General information about being a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg can be found on the university’s doctoral student pages: https://medarbetarportalen.gu.se/doktorand/?languageId=100001&skipSSOCheck=true

Duties

The PhD education in Odontological Science comprises carrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. Project: Peri-implantitis is a pathological condition occurring in patients with dental implants. It is characterized by inflammation in peri-implant tissues and loss of supporting bone. Moderate and severe forms of peri-implantitis occur in about 15% of patients with dental implants and treatment of the condition is demanding, both technically and in terms of resources. Treatment approaches are based on removal of bacterial biofilm from implant components. The use of air-polishing with glycine powder is a promising method for surface decontamination, balancing the risk for surface damage with cleaning efficacy.

The present project aims at investigating the effect of using an air-polishing device as an adjunct to non-surgical and surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. The specific aims are:
1. to evaluate the efficacy of sub-mucosal air-polishing in the non-surgical therapy of peri-implantitis.
2. to evaluate the efficacy of air-polishing in the surgical therapy of peri-implantitis.
3. to assess the risk for adverse events when using an air-polishing device in the non-surgical and surgical therapy of peri-implantitis.
4. to analyze patient-reported outcome measures following non-surgical and surgical therapy of peri-implantitis.

Evaluations are based on a randomized controlled trial including 80 patients with peri-implantitis. Initially, conventional non-surgical therapy is supplemented by the sub-mucosal use of an air-polishing device in the test group. At 6 months, persisting pathology is surgically treated and subjects are, again, randomized to either conventional treatment or to decontamination by air-polishing. A total follow-up of 18 months is planned. The PhD student will be part of an active research group and is to participate in the treatment and follow-up of study participants. The PhD student is expected to contribute to data analysis and data presentation. The project requires that the doctoral student master the Swedish language in speech and writing as the data collection involves contacts with informants who speak Swedish.
