We are looking for several enthusiastic and driven PhD and Post-doc researchers in the field of integrated photonics to work on the emerging aluminium oxide integrated photonic platform for the development of photonics integrated circuits operating in the ultraviolet wavelength range.

The research will focus on the design, fabrication and characterization of different photonic building blocks in the aluminium oxide platform. The goal is to fully understand the fabrication process in order to drastically reduce the losses to enable complex devices to be produced for operation down to 200 nm of wavelength. In this research, a deep understanding of material deposition and of each of the different micro fabrication process steps and how they affect the optical performance is essential. The building blocks will be utilized to fabricate two demonstrators in the field of UV spectroscopy and quantum computing. The PhD and post-docs employed in Aluvia will work very closely as a team and will interact with all members of the IOS Group on the technology development as well as the design of the different devices needed for the two demonstrators.

The project will be carried out in the Integrated Optical Systems (IOS) Group. This research group develops materials, integration technologies and integrated photonics devices (PICs) to enable different applications such as (bio)sensing, LiDAR, metrology, spectroscopy and quantum technology. Fabrication of the devices will take place in the MESA+ Nanolab within the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente. The Aluvia team will work very closely with the project partners, as well as other members of the Integrated Photonics community at the University of Twente.
