Project description
This call is part of Stockholm University’s strategic inter-disciplinary initiative in environmental research in human science, which comprises environmental humanities, law and social science. In a broad sense, this research aims to understand and explain the relationship between human beings, society, environment and nature from a range of theoretical, empirical and methodological traditions and perspectives. Environmental research in human science is an evolving inter-disciplinary field that examines what governs humans’ perceptions, values and behavior and ways of collective organization in relationship to the environment, nature, natural resources and sustainable development. The overarching aim of the strategic initiative is to deepen our understanding of the challenges and possibilities of global environmental change found across different scholarly fields and disciplines in humanities, social science and law. The University’s efforts to strengthen environmental research in human science are defined by trans-disciplinary exchanges of knowledge between different academic disciplines. The idea is that the postdoctoral fellow should collaborate across departments and faculties and also with societal actors. In this way the call can contribute by establishing new internal and external networks and platforms for environment and sustainability. Main responsibilities
The main responsibilities for the postdoctoral fellow is to conduct research within her/his area of specialization and collaborate with researchers across faculties. The initiative aims at strengthening the multi-disciplinary research environment at Stockholm University. Hence, researchers with different theoretical, empirical and methodological perspectives will be given opportunities to focus on their own specific research area and are expected to contribute to strengthen the cross-faculty research environment. The initiative is led by the Steering Board for Environmental Research in Human Science, which consists of researchers from the faculties of humanities, social science and law. The postdoctoral fellow will, depending on disciplinary belonging, be employed and hosted by a department at these faculties.
The research should be related to environment and sustainability issues within humanities, law, social science or corresponding areas. For instance, it can revolve around the interrelated research fields below:
- Environmental humanities
- Environmental politics
- Environmental law
- Environmental economics
- Environmental sociology
- Environmental philosophy
- Environmental history
Qualification requirements
The postdoctoral fellow is appointed primarily for purpose of research and must hold a doctoral degree equivalent to a PhD in a field of study in humanities, law or social science or similar.
Assessment criteria
The assessment is based on the applicants’ research merits as well as a research plan for the research ideas for environmental research in human science. In the plan, the researcher should demonstrate an ability for scientific excellence and address research problems, theories and methods of relevance for the environmental research in human science. The research plan should be independent and contain overarching theoretical questions, methodological approaches and possible empirical focus.
The PhD degree should have been completed no later than the day when the employment decision is made and no more than three years before the deadline for the application. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances (such as sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar).
A central element in the initiative and the call is to establish a leading research environment and network for university-wide, cross-faculty research in human science. Therefore, it is important that the applicants have a capacity to collaborate. Additional merits include capacity to work in a cross-disciplinary team of researchers and to communicate research findings to wider audiences beyond academia. The candidates should demonstrate excellent skills in academic English in writing.
Terms of employment
The positions involve full-time employment for a period of 12-24 months. The positions are for 100% with possibility for teaching or other departmental duties according to agreement with relevant department. Start date is a soon as possible during the spring of 2023.
