Tenure track professor in Textile Design

Department of Design is a top-ranked faculty and the combination of fashion and textile design in our education and research is unique. We are now seeking a tenure track professor in Textile Design. The position will fulfill an important role in strengthening the internationally recognized practice-oriented design education in fashion and textile design. The professor is expected to have  an excellent track record of textile design practices including materials, structure and color, production technologies (woven, knitted and or printed textiles) and industrial textile design knowledge and leadership within the area. As a professor at the Department you are expected to demonstrate strategic leadership with practical examples and visionary orientations.

The recruitment is open from assistant to associate professor level on the Aalto tenure track.

Your role and goals

The professor will contribute to teaching and design practice especially in Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design major, and also act as an expert focusing on textile design across the Department’s Majors at Bachelor´s and Master’s levels. You will be working with an international community of professors and lecturers as well as studio experts.

Your experience and ambitions

The professor is expected to have a well-founded understanding and experience of  industrial textile design and ambitious vision to expand it beyond the disciplinary borders. The position builds on merits in design practice. Experience in applied research is considered an asset. The position expects vision and strong capacity in interdisciplinary collaboration and building networks with industry. We are interested in finding a colleague who has an ability to communicate and engage with students in an inspiring and accessible way. We also expect the suitable candidate to be motivated to collaborate with Department of Design’s research focus areas in textile and fashion by investigating and exploring emerging fields for example smart textiles, novel materials or production technologies, digitalization, or specific areas of sustainability. 

We are looking to hire an ambitious colleague to participate in the department’s  activities with

  • Demonstrable expertise and  documented track record in the area of industrial textile design
  • Experience with teaching and education at the university level, pedagogical training is a merit
  • Applicants are expected to have a minimum Master’s Degree. PhD in a relevant field is an additional merit but not required.
  • The main focus in this position is in strong experience in textile design practice. 
  • Experience of collaborating in research and academic environment is a merit
  • Excellent skills in English.

The call is open for a tenure track professor in textile design. The position will begin as agreed, preferably before the end of 2023. Depending of the merits of the candidate , the professorship is fixed term or permanent.
