The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration and vascular biology. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people. SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se) is a hub for life science research in Sweden and a collaboration between Swedish universities. Everyone at SciLifeLab is employed at one of the partner universities. Since 2013, SciLifeLab is assigned by the Swedish government to operate national infrastructure, to provide cutting-edge life science technologies and -expertise to Swedish researchers, and to be a top international centre for research in health- and environment sciences. SciLifeLab is also hosting a a national pandemic laboratory preparedness program and a new large research programme for Data-Driven Life Sciences (DDLS), with eleven partner organisations.
The successful candidate will be working at the SciLifeLab Data Centre, a central unit within SciLifeLab with responsibility for IT- and data management issues, serving the SciLifeLab and the Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) research program. We have a national assignment and, for example, operate a range of services for life science data and e-infrastructure. We also work with issues about FAIR data and open science, and in close collaboration with major national and international partners. Working at the Data Centre, you will be at the core of Sweden’s top infrastructure for life sciences and have the opportunity to actively shape how state-of-the-art IT and data science are integrated in Swedish life science research, and help to maximize the scientific impact of the large amount of research data generated at SciLifeLab. You will work in a team with researchers, data engineers, data stewards and system developers in a rapidly growing, dynamic and progressive team with a leading role in Swedish data-driven life science.
Duties
As an AI coordinator at the SciLifeLab Data Centre, you will coordinate AI-related projects and initiatives. You will work closely with researchers, technical teams, and administrative staff to plan and implement AI strategies and initiatives. You stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in AI/ML and assist in strategic discussions with both theory and prototyping. Your tasks will include, but are not limited to: monitoring and coordinating AI development projects; evaluation of technologies, frameworks and methods; developing and implementing AI strategies in line with overarching goals; creating project plans and timelines; communicating with stakeholders at all levels, including explaining AI concepts and techniques to non-technical stakeholders. AI is becoming an increasingly important part of scientific research and is a priority area within the new national data platform for SciLifeLab and the DDLS program. An important component of the work is to interact with researchers to understand and articulate needs and to stay updated on trends and frameworks in AI/machine learning. You will work in a team with researchers, engineers, data stewards and system developers, in the middle of SciLifeLab’s national research infrastructure. The work includes collaborations between SciLifeLab and national centers for e-infrastructure, such as Berzelius at the National Supercomputer Center in Linköping.
Requirements
This job requires a university degree in a relevant area. In addition is required:
– Documented experience in machine learning including deep neural networks
– Good technical understanding of AI and machine learning techniques
– Documented experience of working in projects with system developers
– Good ability to structure and document workflows and data analysis projects
– Documented experience of relevant programming languages, including Python
– Documented experience of documentation and version management systems with Git
– Documented experience of working in Linux-based environments
– Good communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical information in a simple way
– Fluent English.

Additional qualifications
– Experience of working with AI platforms and tools
– Experience of AI projects, including planning, organisation, implementation and evaluation
– Experience of virtualization and/or container-based systems and technologies, preferably Kubernetes and Docker

– Experience of working in academic or research-oriented organizations
– Good problem-solving ability and strategic thinking
– Interest in staying up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in AI/ML
– Experience of working in agile projects where DevOps is an important part
– Initiative, drive and an interest in supporting Swedish research in data-driven life science.
