The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among other things, cancer, autoimmune and other genetic diseases. One of the basic ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thus a closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration and vascular biology. Parts of the operation are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology and hospital physics at the Academic Hospital. The department has teaching assignments on a number of program educations, independent courses and international master’s programs within the medical faculty and the technical-natural sciences discipline. The department has a turnover of around SEK 500 million, of which roughly half is external research grants. The number of employees is approximately 345, of which approximately 100 are doctoral students, and there are a total of over 700 employees in the workforce. Job duties
The project is based on studies of somatic mutations, with emphasis on the occurrence of loss of Y- chromosome (LOY) in older men. As part of the project, we want to investigate LOY’s impact on the immune systems function in cancer patients and patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Since the loss of chromosome Y can be a potential marker for cancer, the research will aim to determine the utility of LOY as a diagnostic marker. Based on our research, we are looking for a person who will be skilled in working with patient material, working with primary cells and processing different tissues. Knowledge of statistics is advantageous, you will analyze and compile results for scientific articles. The group has a strong collaboration with research groups in Poland, so it is important that the applicant is open to international collaborations. The position will include a certain amount of administrative work as well as overall operation of all laboratory activities within the research group.
Qualification requirements
To qualify for employment as a research engineer, you must have a master’s degree in biology, molecular biology or related discipline and experience in scientific work. Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent knowledge of oral and written English. Experience with molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA/protein extraction, PCR qPCR/ddPCR). Competence in advanced multi-color flow cytometry and cell sorting, as well as experience of working independently using Aria III is meritorious. The candidate must be self-motivated and curious about solving complicated biological issues. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, in international cooperation.
