About us

We study the fascinating ability of planarian flatworms to regenerate whole animals from tiny pieces of tissue. We have pioneered high quality planarian genome sequencing / assembly and established functional genomics techniques that provide new avenues for investigating the gene regulatory basis of regeneration. We are an interdisciplinary department encompassing bioinformatics, cell biology, taxonomy and high throughput screening, and we believe in cross-project and cross-disciplinary collaboration. We are a truly international department. Our working language is English.

About the position

We are looking for talented and motivated researchers who share our fascination with regeneration specificity. The regeneration of whole animals from tiny tissue fragments requires the interpretation of the remaining tissue as a prerequisite for the specific regeneration of the missing parts. The mechanistic basis of ‘sensing what’s missing’ remains one of the central challenges in the regeneration field and touches on multiple fundamental questions in developmental biology. The project involves the detailed multi-omics characterisation of tissue responses to different wounds via ATACseqCHIPseq, RNAseq and single-cell sequencing and is expected to generate fundamental insights into the genetic control logic of the planarian regeneration response.

Your profile

  • You have a Master’s degree in a relevant life science discipline.
  • You have already obtained significant bench research experience, ideally in one or more of the following: scSeq, CHIPseq, ATACseq, Hi-C.
  • Work experience with an animal model is an advantage, but not required.
  • You are passionate about basic research and understanding biology.
  • You are self-motivated, independent and enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary environment.

We offer

  • The Possibility to join one of the established graduate programs on campus (e.g., International Max Planck Research School for Genome Sciences), including support via a dedicated thesis advisory committee (TAC), networking opportunities with other students, lectures and tutorials and retreats. The Possibility to participate in worldwide departmental field expeditions.
  • Professional training, networking, and career-development opportunities; free language courses
  • An on-site health management: free fitness and yoga room, sports groups, beach volleyball league, and courses for a “moving lunch break”
  • A wide range of opportunities to balance work and family life, including an on-campus kindergarten and vacation care
  • Initiatives for sustainability and a green environment with an on-site biotope
  • A Close proximity to the historic town center of Göttingen with rich cultural opportunities and a vibrant student scene
  • Green and peaceful surroundings that are great for running, hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities

Recruitment

The position should be filled as soon as possible, the exact start date is flexible. The payment and benefits are based on the TVöD (wage agreement for public service personnel) guidelines. Positions are initially limited to three years with a possibility of extension.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. The Max Planck Society strives for gender and diversity equality. We welcome applications from all backgrounds.

How to apply

Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, transcripts and publication record (if applicable), and the contact addresses of two referees as a single document, preferably as a PDF file. Please make sure that the cover letter clearly states your motivation for why you want to join the department and your relevant experience that qualifies you for this position. Review of applications will begin immediately. Please submit the file to
