Your job

As quantitative fisheries scientist you will work within the fisheries advice team on our location in IJmuiden. You will contribute to our work on quantitative fisheries science by participating in or leading projects with a strong focus on fish stock assessment, management strategy evaluation, and the impact of fisheries on the ecosystem. Our team advises the Dutch government and the European Commission on fishing opportunities, management plans and the impact of policy decisions. You will be involved in research and advice activities both nationally and internationally, for example through participation in the scientific activities of ICES and various Regional Fisheries Management Organizations. Finally, we work close together with the fishing industry on innovation of fishing techniques and alternate fisheries strategies.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Contribute to our work on quantitative fisheries science, including stock assessment, management advice and marine ecology;
  • Contribute to the development and simulation-testing of fisheries management strategies through MSE (Management Strategy Evaluations) for both data-rich and data-limited marine and freshwater fish stocks;
  • Engage in discussions on the estimation of fisheries reference points, the incorporation of mixed fisheries considerations into them, and generally analyse and evaluate the technical basis for fisheries advice;
  • Participate in international working groups and workshops;
  • Develop a good sense of how knowledge development can contribute to sensitive political dossiers;
  • Report findings in both scientific papers and at conferences, but also through reports and presentations to clients and stakeholders.

You will be part of a team of around 15 researchers from different backgrounds currently active in fisheries data collection, modelling, and advice. Many opportunities exist to collaborate with other teams working on many other areas of marine research in WMR and WUR.

Your qualities

An university-educated fisheries scientist (at minimum MSc level but PhD will be greatly valued) with a firm theoretical background in fish population dynamics and fisheries ecology;

  • You have practical experience in stock assessment and in conducting simulation on exploited fish stocks. You are willing to expand your toolset and knowledge base in this field;
  • You have a good knowledge of the R statistical language, running and evaluating complex population or ecological models, and are willing to solve computational problems when needed;
  • You are able to report your research in clear and high-quality reports and you can translate results into concrete advice to the government, users and other stakeholders;
  • You enjoy working as part of a team and as such, enjoy to receive and give constructive feedback and are able to work under time pressure;
  • You are pro-active, entrepreneurial, and interested in the stakeholders and societal debate that requires our expertise;
  • Your level of communication skills in English is C1. For non-native speakers of Dutch, you’re willing to learn Dutch to ensure effective communication with our stakeholders

You can see that there are plenty of challenges ahead of you. These challenges can also be seen as development opportunities. So if you do not yet have the track-record required in the vacancy, but do have solid work experience, we would also like to invite you to apply.
