The Department of Computer science and engineering (CSE) is strongly international, with approximately 300 employees hailing from around 40 different countries. The department is a fully integrated department with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as principals. Around 90 faculty members and 120 PhD students are engaged in research and education across the full spectrum of computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, and interaction design, from foundations to applications.  The department is organised into four academic divisions: Computing Science, Data Science and AI, Interaction Design and Software Engineering, and Computer and Network Systems.

The Division of Computing Science has approximately 80 employees and is now recruiting a full-time teacher in the category adjunct. We have a permanent position in a lively, international and outreaching work environment, in the lively city of Gothenburg on the West Coast of Sweden. The position is open to qualified applicants with competence teaching in all areas broadly covered by the Division. We offer you rewarding tasks and the freedom to develop your competence in university-level teaching and also to contribute to research and management in accordance with your interests.

Computer Science at our Division includes research and education in programming languages, hardware design, cyber security and privacy, natural language processing, formal methods, logic and type theory. Our teaching also covers data structures, algorithms and databases as well as programming from beginner to advanced level.

Duties

We offer employment with an emphasis on education which, in addition to teaching and student supervision, leaves a lot of room for pedagogical development. We are looking for a person who can contribute strongly to the department’s endeavor to conduct education and at a high international level.

Your main activity will be teaching and supervision in the courses and programs given by the division. You will contribute to the management and development of educational activities. You are also expected to participate in the planning of teaching and development of courses, as well as participate in other activities at the Department.

More specifically, you will teach computer programming from basic to advanced level, to students from diverse backgrounds, and provide courses in other core Computer Science areas. You will also actively participate in the development of courses and related educational programs. Supervision of projects and degree theses is also part of your duties.

The position initially covers 100% teaching and education-related administration, of which 10% is used for competence development.

Qualifications

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 1, Section 2.1 of University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure for Teachers,

To qualify for the position, you must have a Masters-level degree in computer science or a related subject, as well as documented teaching experience in the subject.

You must be able to teach in both Swedish and English.

Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure for Teachers, chapter 2. In addition,  current rules for the employment of teachers at the University of Gothenburg and the IT faculty are applied. You can find them via the following link, paragraph 1.1.2:

Appointment procedure for teaching posts at the IT faculty (in Swedish).

In the assessment, special importance will be attached to scientific and pedagogical skill to an equal degree.

Well-documented relevant teaching experience at university level is a requirement. Particularly meritorious is the ability to plan and teach courses within the subject area. Experience of and familiarity with course development and/or program management is also a merit, as is supervision at all levels and contributions to research. Pedagogical qualifications must be well documented; both extent and quality must be possible to assess.

To be able to act as examiners of our courses, the teaching staff must have studied courses in higher education teaching and learning for at least 15 credits or equivalent competence. Such courses are therefore a merit, even though not compulsory. If courses are lacking at the time of employment, the Department can offer working time for the education.

You must demonstrate your ability to work both independently and in a group, as well as an ability to contribute positively to the work environment.

Applicants should be comfortable with speaking and writing both Swedish and English. Knowledge of Swedish is meritorious. Practical and industrial experience in the subject is also meritorious.

After a weighted assessment of merits and development potential in all areas, we will select the candidate that is judged to have the best qualifications to carry out the tasks included in the employment, collaborate with other staff members, and contribute to a positive development of the department.
