The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several different areas, such as endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.
Krefting Research Centre (http://krefting.gu.se), Institute of Medicine, University of Gothenburg, is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a full-time 2-year position. Krefting Research Centre comprises of over 20 researchers and research nurses divided into three research areas: epidemiology of asthma, mechanistic studies of inflammation, and extracellular vesicles. The centre hosts the West Sweden Asthma Study (WSAS), one of the largest Europe’s epidemiological studies on asthma and lung disease. In addition to core ongoing epidemiological and clinical studies, several sub-projects have now been initiated within WSAS, including the COVID-19 in Western Sweden (COWEST) and the Swedish Research Council-funded STELLAR (ReSpiraTory EpidemioLogy Research PLAtfoRm) projects. COWEST creates a population-representative and clinically focused adult cohort to determine mid-to-long-term cardio-respiratory and neurological outcomes in COVID-19. STELLAR builds a robust long-term multidisciplinary research environment that brings together leading Swedish allergy and respiratory studies in order to catalyze novel epidemiological studies and increase capacity in undertaking respiratory research in Sweden. The recruited candidate will work in the intersection between WSAS core studies and the ongoing COWEST and STELLAR projects.

Subject area description
Airway diseases, such as asthma, COPD and COVID-19, are complex diseases with unpredictable clinical outcomes and they cause poor quality of life on patients and their families. Asthma affects over 300 million people in the world and by 2030, COPD will be the fourth leading cause of death globally. Their complex nature impacts on understanding of how they develop and by implication how they are treated. Despite extensive research done over the last century, much is unknown. Understanding the long-term consequences of airway diseases on the society is a priority research area and requires population-based long-term studies. The West Sweden Asthma Study (WSAS) is a good example of such studies. Therefore, knowledge generated will contribute to ongoing clinical understanding of airway diseases.
Duties
The candidate will be responsible for analyzing and publishing the results in international journals based on the core studies WSAS, COWEST and STELLAR projects. The work also includes to presenting project results at national and international scientific meetings, be responsible for ensuring that the quality of data, data management and analyses of the projects meet the highest international standards. The successful candidate is expected to be able to work independently and collaborate with researchers within the Krefting Research Centre, the University of Gothenburg and Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The holder of the position is also expected to participate in supervision of doctoral students working in the project.
Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years.
Assessment criteria
Documented experiences in working with population-based health and/or clinical studies, preferably in the context of respiratory diseases and allergy is a merit. Good knowledge in English, both speaking and writing, is a requirement. Experience of clinical studies and/or statistical modelling is a merit. The applicant is expected to be able to work independently and to collaborate well with other researchers within a team and be able to participate in supervision of students. Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities, such as the ability to work independently, and organizational skills.
