The Department of Social Work is located at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Gothenburg. In an expansive and dynamic educational and research environment, and with a strong commitment to society, we offer an undergraduate social work programme, various second-cycle programmes as well as doctoral (PhD; third-cycle) education.. The department has extensive international contacts and collaborations through various networks and agreements with universities around the world.

Our research activities are structured around six research platforms with different subject specialisations. The research is conducted with different theoretical and methodological orientations. The department’s research activities constitute an important part of the work on a complete academic environment, by having a strong link to the programmes offered at the department, both at undergraduate, advanced and doctoral level. It is conducted in mutual collaboration with other societal actors, users, professionals or researchers, both globally and locally, by qualified and committed employees in a strong and attractive research environment.

The Department of Social Work now announces a full-time position as professor in social work in the field of social exclusion with a focus on homelessness and/or addiction. We are looking for someone who wants to take a leading role in the work to further develop and expand the research activities at the department.

Social work.

Subject area description 

Social work involves the study of the living conditions and experiences of socially vulnerable people. Central to the subject of social work is also the study of the causes and consequences of social problems as these can be understood at the individual, group and community level. It is also important to study how different interventions are designed to prevent or alleviate social problems. Social work is the main subject at first, second and third cycle level.

Duties 

As a professor, you are expected to take a leading role in the development of the field of social work, nationally and internationally. You are expected to lead and develop research work at the department, especially by contributing to strengthening research activities in the field of social exclusion. The tasks include working towards increased external funding of research at the department. You are expected to teach, supervise and examine in the doctoral programme and at first and second cycle level. As a professor, you are also expected to collaborate on education, research and development in the subject both internationally and nationally, both within the academy and with the surrounding society through high presence and engagement in the workplace, you are expected to take particular responsibility for supporting a collegial and inclusive culture in the organisation.

Eligibility 

Qualified to be employed as a professor are those who have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical skills in the field of social exclusion, with a focus on homelessness and/or substance abuse. Eligible candidates must have a doctoral deegre in social work or a related subject.

Assessment criteria

Scientific excellence

The scientific expertise must have been demonstrated through own research with a high degree of problem formulation ability, awareness of theory and methodology, and analytical skills. The scientific expertise must be significantly higher than what is required for docent competence and demonstrate breadth and depth in the field of social exclusion. The assessment shall also include the applicant’s merits in terms of obtaining external research grants, research policy assignments and other scientific review assignments.

A merit is a documented ability to obtain external research grants in competition.

Teaching skills

Employment as a professor requires a very high degree of pedagogical skills demonstrated by experience of high quality education at first, second and third cycle level. With regard to third-cycle education, the applicant must have extensive documented experience of supervising, training and/or assessing doctoral students at the beginning, middle and final stages of the doctoral programme.

Experience and development of postgraduate education is an advantage.

If there is no higher education teaching qualification in accordance with the requirements of the University of Gothenburg (courses PIL101, PIL102 and PIL 103) in connection with the application, this must be validated, or the specified programme completed, within one year of the start of employment.

Management and co-operation

A merit is documented experience of leadership in research, as well as documented experience of academic positions of trust.

Other assessment aspects

General suitability with regard to the content of the advertised position is required. In this recruitment, the university will primarily consider the person who, after an overall assessment of competence and skills, is deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop current tasks and contribute to a positive development of research activities.

The ability to teach and communicate, both orally and in writing, in Swedish and English is a requirement. If such ability is not available, you are expected to be able to do so within two years.

Selection process 

Interviews in which the applicants are given the opportunity to describe and develop their views on teaching and research in the subject will, in addition to expert opinions, form the basis for the employment decision. The appointment will also take into account the department’s need for expertise. The applicant must have the personal qualities, such as determination, the ability to create a good collaborative climate and a creative research environment and good communication skills, which are required to fulfil the position well.
