Your Job:

The aim of the master thesis is to prove the potential of cold sintering for tape-cast barium zirconate membranes. The work includes the following tasks:

  • Powder characterization: The work compares two BZCY powders, a conventional powder and a powder optimized for cold sintering. The characterization includes powder morphology, particle size, and phase purity
  • Tape casting: The two powders are processed into free-standing membranes by tape-casting
  • Cold sintering process (CSP): The tapes are partially or fully debinded and infiltrated with the liquid sintering additive. This step is followed by systematic optimization of the cold sintering parameters for tape-cast membranes in a heated press mold or a laminating press. The final sintering is carried out at 1300°C
  • Characterization of properties: The samples are characterized in terms of microstructure (scanning electron microscope), density (Archimedes)and conductivity (impedance spectroscopy)

Your Profile:

  • Good grades in your ongoing master`s degree program in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering
  • Interest in the topic and willingness to learn
  • Knowledge of the synthesis and processing of inorganic materials via the powder technological route
  • Experience with working in the laboratory, as well as in the handling of hazardous substances and laboratory equipment
  • High degree of independence, motivation and reliability
  • Advanced knowledge of English (written and spoken)
