The Max-Planck-Institute for Neurobiology of Behaviour – caesar (MPINB) is a neuroethology institute located in Bonn that studies how the collective activity of the vast numbers of interconnected neurons in the brain gives rise to the pleth-ora of animal behaviors. Our research spans a large range of scales from the nano-scale imaging of brain circuitry, to large-scale functional imaging of brain circuitry during behavior, to the quantification of natural animal behaviors.

The Research Group Neural Circuits is offering a position as a student assistant (m/f/d) for computational data analysis.

What it is about

We are looking for a highly motivated student interested in investigating neural circuit connectivity and dynamics based on the connecotome of the fruit fly. The connectome describes the connectivity of all neurons in the brain of the fly at the resolution of individual synapses and multiple such connectomes have been published over the last few years. The connectome allows to visualize and analyze biological neural circuits and to develop hypotheses about the function of populations of neurons. Additionally, the connectome allows detailed simulations of neural networks that are anatomically constrained.

What we expect from you

  • You have a stong computational background, such as physics, biophysics, mathematics, engineering, computer sci-ence, neuroscience or related fields. A background in neuroscience is not required.
  • Good knowledge of programming languages for data analysis (such as Python, which is required for working with the connectome) and a strong interest in quantitative approaches for describing networks
  • Interest in computational modeling for data analysis, analysis of large data sets, as well as in using modern methods for data analysis, for example machine learning
  • Interest in neurobiology and in interacting with members of the team to address questions underlying the workings of biologicaly circuits in the brain
  • You are located in the Bonn area, this position requires working at the institute

What we offer

  • You will work flexible hours (max. 20 hours per week)
  • You will work in a multidisciplinary, international team
  • Cutting-edge equipped laboratories with a range of novel behavior and imaging paradigms
  • Salary in line with the Max Planck regulations
  • Employee benefits and a family-friendly culture

MPINB is committed promoting equal opportunities and diversity. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation.
