We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Bioinformatics Developer to join the InterPro team, which is part of the Sequence Family Resources led by Alex Bateman.

InterPro is a core protein data resource that plays a vital role in the classification of protein domains and families. It consolidates 13 protein family databases, including Pfam, to provide comprehensive annotations used by various scientific communities. InterPro enables researchers to gain novel insights from vast DNA and protein sequence data, facilitating the interpretation of experiments and the design of new ones.

Our tech stack includes Python, Java, Oracle, MySQL, ElasticSearch, HPC (High Performance Compute clusters), JavaScript, TypeScript.

Your role

In this role you will develop and maintain the InterPro resource and InterProScan software. You will be part of a small team of 4-5 developers responsible for implementing new features and ensuring timely releases of InterPro and InterProScan.

You will design, develop, test and document the new version of InterProScan, while also contributing to the maintenance of the current Java-based version. You will also collaborate with the curation team to prioritise data processing.Apply now

You have

  • A postgraduate degree in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and Java, with a strong background in software development.
  • Experience working with relational databases, such as Oracle and MySQL.
  • Familiarity with version control systems like Git and collaboration platforms like Github.
  • Working knowledge of Unix/Linux operating systems.
  • Strong communication skills, including verbal and written

You might also have

  • Experience with workflow managers, particularly Nextflow.
  • Experience in high-performance computing environments and job schedulers (e.g., LSF, SLURM).
  • Experience with Docker, Singularity, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience following Agile software development principles, particularly Scrum.
