Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Quantify and map the current and future food production potentials with a process based agro-ecosystem model that has been established at the chair working group (LPJmL)
  • Compare food production potentials with future food demand
  • Lead advances in model implementation of alternative agricultural systems, such as agroforestry, intercropping, multiple cropping, silvopastural systems etc.
  • Identify future drivers of change in food systems, including climate change impacts, and their effect on food production and agricultural productivity
  • In the long term, advance the coupling of the agro-ecosystem model to a spatial-explicit economic model of your choice in order to account for international trade of agricultural goods
  • Together with other team members, analyse trade-off between food production, nature conservation, water extraction and energy production
  • Third-party funding acquisition
  • Writing scientific publications
  • Teaching and student mentoring (5 SWS).

Your qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Agricultural Sciences, Agronomy, Agricultural Management, Land Use, Geography, or similar
  • Strong background in quantitative assessment of food production systems
  • Experience or the ability to acquire a good level in scientific programming (e.g. C, Python, FORTRAN) for modelling purposes
  • Prior experience in interdisciplinary work is a plus
  • Experience in teaching at higher education level and mentoring students is a plus
  • The ability to work independently and on your own initiative
  • Structured and goal-oriented thinking
  • Capacity to familiarise yourself quickly with new topics
  • Creativity and openness to new approaches
  • A high level of competence in oral and written English
  • Competence in oral and written German or willingness to learn German
  • Reliability and a high level of motivation
  • Willingness to travel for work (project meetings, workshops etc.)
  • Capacity for teamwork
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Organisational talent and management skills
  • Capacity for networking and building a productive scientific network.

It is a qualification position for a total of six years, with a possibility to do a habilitation (German qualification as university lecturer). This is organized as a full-time A13/E13 position for three years and its prolongation for three more years in case of positive evaluation and fulfilment of official requirements.
