We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are now looking to appoint a postdoc in the field of Molecular Ion Channel Physiology.

Work assignments

You will work in a project aimed at unravelling binding sites and underlying molecular mechanisms of endogenous and pharmacological compounds interacting with voltage-gated potassium ion channels, and at developing new pharmacological compounds. To this end, the project uses interdisciplinary approaches such as electrophysiology, molecular biology and molecular dynamics simulations. You will be a key team member using molecular dynamics approaches and will interact closely with the other experimental team members in your research group.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

We are looking for someone with an academic degree in biochemistry or equivalent and a doctorate in computational science or equivalent. We see that you have documented experience with molecular dynamics simulations, including enhanced sampling and/or coarse-grained simulations and the ability to work independently with these approaches. You also have experience in studying interactions between ligands/lipids and transmembrane domains in membrane proteins and designing lipid-like ligands with transmembrane domains as targets.

Experience with the following methods and techniques is also a requirement for the position:

  • Experience with coarse-grained parameterization
  • Small-molecule docking
  • Martini 3
  • GROMACS or other MD simulation software
  • Enhanced-sampling methods to calculate binding free-energy
  • Scripting of MDAnalysis/MDTraj or similar tools to analyse large MD datasets

It is an advantage if you have previous experience of working with voltage-gated ion channels within the Kv7 family. The position requires very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

As a person, you are structured, self-motivated and initiative-taking. You have good analytical skills and can solve complex issues. Furthermore, you are quality-conscious and characterized by good communication and collaboration skills.

The workplace

You will be employed at the Division of Neurobiology (NEURO), in Sara Liin’s research group. The research group focuses on ion channels found in the human heart, nervous system and muscles in order to understand how hereditary mutations disrupt the function of ion channels and to develop new chemical substances to save the normal function of these ion channels.

The Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV) is one of the university’s largest departments with affiliation mainly within the Faculty of Medicine. Our goal is to conduct education and research in medicine and biomedicine, with a high international quality. At BKV you will find leading research in a large spectrum of modern biomedicine; from detailed molecular and cellular studies to genetics, clinical research and epidemiology.

The employment

This post is a temporary contract of two years with the possibility of extension up to a total maximum of three years. The position as a postdoc is full-time.

Starting date October, 2023.
