The Energy Reactions and Carriers Group, led by Dr Ewa Marek, is looking for a research assistant/associate to investigate the potential for thermal (TES) and thermochemical (TCES) energy storage to provide services to the grid, and enable wider deployment of renewable energy. The project addresses the need for a low-cost and efficient technology for energy storage on a large scale. The work encompasses fundamental studies in tandem with the development of whole-system modelling of TES and TCES systems. The considered TCES will include various reversible gas-solid reactions, including oxidation/reduction, carbonation/decarbonation or hydration/dehydration.

The work of the post-holder will encompass experiments and process modelling, delivering information for process optimisation and techno-economic analysis. The candidate must be highly motivated and must have a strong academic record. Excellent planning and organisational skills with the ability to ensure deadlines are met are a must. Previous experience with storage materials is not required, but examples of previous work researching new materials and modelling gas-solid reactions are welcome.

The project is funded by EPSRC and will involve a close collaboration of the post-holder with partners from the Department of Engineering (University of Cambridge), Imperial College London and the University of Manchester. The PDRA will travel to partners and attend regular meetings, presenting the progress of the work.
