The post has been created to enhance our world-leading research in Paediatric Neuro-Oncology and Cancer Biology and to provide exceptional clinical care in Paediatric Neuro-Oncology.

You will be based within the Translational Medical Sciences Academic Unit within the School of Medicine. Your clinical duties will be undertaken in the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust’s (NUH) Family Health Division.

The major purposes of this role are to:

  • develop and maintain an internationally excellent research programme aligned to the research strategies of the School of Medicine working within the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre
  • teach undergraduates and postgraduate students
  • contribute to the collegiate needs of the School of Medicine, Faculty and University
  • provide clinical service in Paediatric Cancer focused on Neuro-Oncology in NUH NHS Trust working within an Honorary Consultant Contract, having demonstrable impact on the care and wellbeing of patients. 

Specifically, you will:

  • develop your research portfolio in Childhood and Adolescent brain tumours and gain external research funding 
  • further develop, and maintain, an internationally excellent research programme securing external research funding from NIHR, Research Councils, charitable and/or industry sources 
  • produce research output which will be considered to be of international excellence in Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessments, disseminating research findings and impact on clinical practice 
  • develop multidisciplinary research collaborations within, and outside, of the University 
  • attract and supervise BMedSci, Masters and PhD students, Academic Clinical Fellows and Lecturers 
  • deliver high quality teaching to, and examine, undergraduate and postgraduate students, contribute to the development of undergraduate and postgraduate education and act as personal tutor 
  • provide a clinical service at consultant level as a Paediatric Neuro-Oncologist working within the Regional specialist Paediatric Haemato-Oncology service alongside specialist consultant colleagues at Nottingham Children’s Hospital. 

You will work 50:50 in the post, split between University and NHS duties.  It is a requirement that you maintain your GMC Registration with a licence to practice, your GMC Registration on the Specialist Register and undertake clinical practice in Paediatric Neuro-Oncology at NUH NHS Trust.

You will be expected to fulfil NHS clinical service duties within your Job Plan as agreed with the Head of the Paediatric Oncology Service including: 

  • specialist care for inpatients and outpatients in Paediatric Neuro-Oncology 
  • provision, with consultant colleagues, of a comprehensive Paediatric Neuro-Oncology and Children’s Cancer service, including management of patients during, and out of, working hours (evenings/nights and weekends).

Candidates must hold a PhD or MD by research in a relevant field, as well as holding a CCT in Paediatrics with sub-speciality accreditation in Oncology OR be eligible for such CCT within 6 months of the interview date.

This is a permanent role. Hours of work are full-time, 40 hours per week.
