The position will be in the Applied Mathematics department. The Applied Mathematics department has an active research portfolio in algorithmic discrete mathematics, stochastic operations research, complex networks, statistics, systems theory, computational science, and artificial intelligence with applications in energy, health, traffic and imaging. The new position is supposed to strengthen the existing foundational research on algorithms, graphs, and networks with applications to data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

What we expect
We expect you to actively develop your mathematical research profile and seek connections between fundamental mathematical research and societal impact. You will be involved in the teaching program of the department of Applied Mathematics at the BSc and MSc level, and the department also supplies service teaching to other programmes and faculties. Acquiring the University Teaching Qualification during the first three years is obligatory. The research and teaching share is 50/50, with a reduction of teaching to 30% during the first three years.

To support multidisciplinary research with societal impact, the UT has four research institutes, among them DSI (Digital Society Institute) and TechMed (Biotechnology and Technical Medicine).

YOUR PROFILE

  • You have acquired a PhD degree in mathematics, theoretical computer science of a closely related discipline.
  • Your research is on algorithms, graphs, networks, and preferable also its connections to learning. You are willing to work interdisciplinary. You are passionate about exploring new directions.
  • Your work is high quality illustrated by publications in corresponding conferences and/or journals.
  • You are ready to take up the challenge to acquire research funding, either individually via the talent line of NWO or the European Research Council, or in joint work with other colleagues within or outside the department.
  • You have excellent communication skills, allowing for efficient interaction with colleagues within the discipline but also beyond.

OUR OFFER

  • We offer a permanent position with an initial contract of one year. Part-time is negotiable. A positive evaluation in the first year leads to a permanent appointment. The criteria are a strong research record, passion for teaching, the ability to acquire funding, and the ability to establish an international research network.
  • The position is at Assistant- or Associate Professor level, with a monthly salary ranging from € 4.332,– (scale 11) to € 8.025,– (scale 14) gross depending on qualifications.
  • The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO) and include a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
