JOB DESCRIPTION
The candidate will develop a new line of research within the field of geology and/or geophysics focusing on the energy transition and the sustainable usage of the Earth’s subsurface. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, geothermal energy, carbon capture storage (CCS), and underground storage of sustainable energy sources (e.g. hydrogen, heat). The position involves teaching on topics concerned with sustainability from a geoscience perspective at the BSc and MSc level, and supervision of BSc and MSc research projects.

Your duties
- carry out creative research by acquiring external funding and publishing your results in scientific journals
- make impact on the field as witnessed by a variety of indicators, for example, presentations at (international) meetings, media coverage, end user benefit, peer recognition
- translate your expertise into effective collaborations with partners in academia, governmental or non—governmental organizations, and/or industry
- build up a successful research group and supervise PhD students
- coordinate and teach courses offered in BSc and MSc Earth Science programmes
- contribute to development of the teaching curriculum
- engage in leadership roles within the department
YOUR REQUIREMENTS
- a PhD degree on a topic relevant to the position
- post-PhD research experience (proven by publications and/or funding acquisition) and/or experience in non-academic research organizations or related industry (proven by publications/reports and project acquisition)
- demonstrated ability to initiate and develop an independent line of research
- experience in teaching in the field of Earth Sciences
- a basic teaching qualification (BKO), an equivalent qualification from a university outside the Netherlands, or willing to obtain such a qualification during your initial contract
- although not a requirement at the date of appointment, it is expected that you will reach a C1 level in both Dutch and English within five years. The department offers most of its BSc courses in Dutch, and its MSc courses in English
WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?
A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11)
and a maximum €5,439 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.
The initial employment contract will affect a period of 18 months. After a positive evaluation planned at 18 months, the position will be made permanent and you will be offered a personal career track with guidance, training and mentoring.

About the department
The Department of Earth Sciences has approximately 35 permanent staff members organized in twelve research groups. Research in the department is focused on two general areas: Geology & Geochemistry and Earth & Climate. The Department teaches in the Earth Sciences as well as in the Earth Sciences, Economics & Sustainability BSc programmes, and in the MSc programmes Earth Sciences and Hydrology.
