The Role

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic individual to join the NIHR Innovation Observatory’s Industry Programme. The post holder will work closely with our Industry Partnership Lead to develop and deliver a portfolio of projects that will support the life sciences industry drive innovation into health and care. The post holder will have knowledge of the life sciences sector in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health and awareness of the wider health sciences landscape.

We require an enthusiastic, strategic, team player with some experience of product development and commercialisation to work on a range of business-related activities The post holder will also play an important role in networking with national bodies such as the Office of Life Sciences (OLS) and Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), as well as with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) & other external stakeholders (from the NIHR, NHS England, Department of Health & Social Care, NICE). Experience of facilitating discussion with a variety of stakeholders will be advantageous. The post holder will play a key role in further establishing the Innovation Observatory’s brand, and refining and improving our value proposition to the life sciences sector.

This is a national role and the post sits in our exciting initiative, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Innovation Observatory (IO). Using next generation digital analytics, we bring together expertise to observe and report on health innovation for the UK and beyond, helping shape future health provision.

The Innovation Observatory is a £27M initiative, funded by the NIHR, based at Newcastle University. We bring together data scientists, text mining and evidence synthesis experts, and information specialists, to provide an essential service for the NHS and policymakers. Our outputs help them make informed decisions about how healthcare should be provided in the future. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Engage with the life sciences sector to understand the value proposition of the Innovation Observatory’s outputs
  • Work with colleagues across the Innovation Observatory’s programmes to ensure that the needs of industry partners in the life sciences space are captured and fed into method and tool development
  • Lead on scoping and innovation workshops with industry clients to help produce project proposals that provide clear and achievable deliverables
  • Work with colleagues in the Business and Enterprise team within the University to ensure proposals are appropriately costed and contracted
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Industry Trade Bodies (ABHI, Bioindustry Association (BIA) Medilink, DIT, KTN’s); Health Networks (AHSNs, AHSC); Regional Networks (such as Bionow, One Nucleus, OBN); Stakeholders (NIHR, AAC/NHS E) and Funders (Venture Capital and other investors, Innovate UK, i4i, SBRi,AMRC, etc.,)
  • Act as the project lead to ensure the efficient and successfully deliver of Industry Programme projects
  • Line manage, support and mentor IO analysts as part of your project, programme and wider IO team
  • Conduct and supervise desk-based research and analysis, drawing on a wide range of resources
  • Manage a portfolio of projects, providing effective project and resource management against key metrics and milestones
  • Ensure projects are delivered to time within the resource envelope
  • Produce detailed outputs, reports and case studies that collate information from a variety of sources and present key findings
  • Contribute to and help further develop our processes and methodologies
  • Any other duties as specified commensurate with the grade.

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of working with and building strong relationships with commercial clients
  • Experience of leading workshops and meetings with clients to understand their needs and help produce project proposals with clear, achievable deliverables
  • Proven experience of leading a multidisciplinary, creative team to deliver engaging, high-quality outputs
  • Excellent planning, organisational and project management skills with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience of presenting to a wide variety of audiences, both in person and remotely
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Will have a strong commercial awareness
  • Proven experience of a range of IT programmes, especially Microsoft Office 365
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally, if required

Qualifications (essential)

  • Educated to postgrad standard in an innovation, design, social science or technology discipline and/or significant appropriate work experience
