Salary: £44,414 to £47,047 with progression to £52,841 per annum

Reporting to the Programme and Project Management Practice Lead, you will be adept at managing multiple projects and have extensive experience in project management methodologies and technologies, and a familiarity with the full systems development lifecycle.


The Programme and Project Manager will contribute to the development of a consistent and scalable approach to programme and project management based on industry standard best practices, validating, documenting, and disseminating project management related knowledge.

Key Accountabilities

  • Delivering programmes and projects using best practice for the IT Service
  • Managing key stakeholder relationships and activities at all levels of the organisation (and externally) across the programme and project lifecycle, from concept through to service transition
  • Providing programme and project management coaching and mentoring to staff either directly within their team or in a broader matrix organisation
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of the programme and project management practice

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Essential)

  • Experience with one or more project management methodologies (for example, PMI, PMBOK, PRINCE2 or agile) gained in both Waterfall and Agile/Lean environments
  • Extensive experience of running large and/or complex programmes and projects, particularly multi-faceted IT-centric initiatives and/or those that deliver digital transformation
  • Ability to win commitment and support from senior and influential colleagues across the University; and broker complex technical agreements within the organisation and with external parties including commercial relationships
  • Effective influencing and negotiation skills in an environment where resources may not be in direct control of this role; including ability to lead and motivate virtual teams
  • Excellent planning and prioritisation skills e.g. simultaneously balancing a number of large and complex programme and projects. Knowledge of project planning tools with evidence of practical application is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to quantify resource requirements and measure and communicate proposed project benefits and risks
  • Significant experience in IT and business/industry
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with proven ability in logical and conceptual thinking
  • Highly customer-focussed and service orientated, with the ability to develop and manage relationships with customers and suppliers effectively
  • Ability to work under pressure and with a fair degree of autonomy, whilst also contributing to and supporting team-working
  • A degree in information systems, business administration, or an equivalent qualification or experience
  • A recognised programme or project management qualification (e.g. MSP, PMI, PRINCE2, SAfE)
