Job description

We are looking for two motivated, inspiring and friendly Assistant Professors to join the Software Production group

external link

, which is part of the Software Division in the Department of Information and Computing Sciences

external link of Utrecht University external link. The group is renowned for its empirical research that is made possible thanks to a wide network of industrial collaborators in the area of large-scale product software. The group has solid research lines in various sub-fields of software production, including requirements engineering, software ecosystems, software for responsible organisations, and software architecture for AI-driven systems.
In addition to defining your research line within the Software Production group, you will actively contribute to educational activities. You are willing to teach existing courses offered by the department (for an overview, see the page external link of the department of Information and Computing Sciences), supervise students’ research projects and, if appropriate and necessary, develop new courses and course components.

There are two openings in two sub-fields of software production.

  • Software Engineering for AI
    In this position, you will develop a research line within Software Engineering for AI, also known as AI Engineering. You should focus on how to adapt software development for AI-based systems, possibly with emphasis on specific phases or activities in the development lifecycle. Within the context of software engineering for AI-based systems, you may specialise into requirements engineering; software architecture; development processes; continuous deployment and cloud operations; compliance with norms; AI-driven engineering; production of large-scale AI systems; human values and ethical aspects.
  • Software Production
    You are willing to conduct research in the broad context of software production: all the activities that pertain to the creation and evolution of software products. You should complement the group’s research with a focus on one or more themes, such as requirements engineering; software design and architecting; software product management; deployment and operations; software business; software ecosystems; maintenance and evolution.

If you are excited to actively participate and collaborate in shaping our developing department, we look forward to receiving your application. In your application, please specify which position you are interested in.

Qualifications

We are looking for collaborative and enthusiastic new colleagues with:

  • a PhD degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a related field;
  • a vision on future research directions in their own area of expertise;
  • experience with, or good prospects for, acquiring external research funds;
  • publications in high-quality international conferences and journals;
  • experience with, or readiness to supervise PhD projects;
  • experience with and enthusiasm for developing, coordinating, and teaching courses in our BSc and/or MSc programmes, and student supervision;
  • proficiency in English external link, both written and spoken.

In your motivation letter, we encourage you to explain how your profile matches the group and how it will constitute an asset. Offer

  • an appointment as Assistant Professor, starting with a fixed term contract. Following a positive evaluation after 18 months, this will be converted in a permanent contract;
  • a full-time gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience – ranging between €4.332 and €5,929 per month (scale 11 at the level of Assistant Professor (universitair docent; UD) according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (CAO));
  • 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • Special perks including a PhD candidate position when receiving the permanent contract funded by the Department in order to further build up your research, support for traveling to conferences, and various educational and development programmes offered by our University;
