The Department of Child and Youth Studies at Stockholm University employs around 150 employees who conduct teaching and research in preschool didactics, child and youth studies, children’s culture and extended education. This call applies to the subject of preschool didactics and it is located at the Section for Early Childhood Education (FUFF).

Subject/subject description
Child and youth studies is an interdisciplinary subject at the department focusing on children and young people’s living conditions and socialization. The cultural contexts of children and young people, such as the family, preschool and school, peer group, media and various social conditions are of interest to the department.
The call for applications concerns a professorship in Child and Youth Studies with a focus on preschool, which involves development of the subject area of preschool didactics. The position thereby holds an interdisciplinary orientation with a focus on preschool education and activities with historical and present-day perspectives. It encompasses questions of children’s play, learning, meaning-making and exploration of a variety of subject areas such as language, mathematics, natural sciences and technology. Also the pedagogical and didactic considerations concerning children’s ethical and aesthetic approaches, development and learning are included. Preschool teacher profession, documentation, evaluation and assessment are of interest in preschool didactics. Furthermore, the subject area includes the overarching questions of how laws and political decisions as well as other structural factors influence children’s living conditions and learning processes in preschool both historically and at present. In preschool didactics, theories and methods are implemented from both Social Sciences and Humanities.

Main responsibilities
The main duties are to conduct independent research, to contribute to the development of the department’s research culture with a focus on preschool didactics, to initiate and organize research projects, to teach and supervise at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels, to develop the degree programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels as well as to contribute to the departmental collaboration with the wider society. The employment also includes management and administrative assignments.

Qualification requirements
A person who is qualified to be employed as a professor will have demonstrated both research and teaching skills.
Research expertise should have been demonstrated through independent research within the subject area of the position that significantly exceeds the requirements for qualification as an Associate Professor, both in terms of quality and quantity. Significance is also attached to the planning and coordination of research. Requirements also include an extensive and well-documented track record of research in the field of preschool and with relevance to the subject of preschool didactics.
Teaching proficiency should have been demonstrated through teaching and supervision in the subject area of the position, at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. The assessment of teaching skills should cover the planning, implementation and evaluation of  teaching, as well as supervision and examination. Teaching proficiency should be well documented and in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities.
The applicant must have the ability to cooperate with colleagues as well as other abilities that are required in order successfully to meet the demands of the position.

Assessment criteria
Special and equal emphasis will be placed on teaching and research skills in the field of the position. In the assessment of research skills, research in the specific subject area of preschool didactics is particularly meritorious.  

Strong emphasis will be placed on:

  • Having successfully planned, applied for and obtained research project funds from external research funding bodies.
  • Successful research supervision demonstrated through active guidance of at least one student to a completed PhD degree.
  • A well-designed research proposal.
  • Ability to develop and lead research environment and personnel.
  • Administrative skills proven through leadership of research and teaching.
  • Documented ability to cooperate well with colleagues and fellow researchers.
  • Ability to collaborate with the surrounding society.
  • Ability to disseminate findings from research and developmental projects both nationally and internationally.

Teaching and learning in higher education
The following is a merit:

  • Completion of at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education, or to have otherwise acquired the equivalent knowledge.
  • Completed training in research supervision.
