Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society
The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 520 employees and a revenue 2022 of 518 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
The Division of Family Medicine and Primary Care is responsible for parts of the Study Programme in Medicine at KI. We have our own Research School in Family Medicine for doctoral students. Our research includes various projects in multimorbidity, common diseases such as diabetes, reduced kidney function and emotional distress in primary care. We have also projects in medical education. Approximately 100 persons , among them about 35 doctoral students, are affiliated to our division.
Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
The section of Family Medicine and Primary Care has an ongoing project aiming to identify novel microbiome-derived mechanisms leading to kidney and cardiovascular disease. We are creating a unique comprehensive multi-omics framework, comprising gut and urinary microbiome, genomics, and metabolomics and proteomics analyses in faeces, blood and urine as a basis for discovery along the gut-kidney-cardiovascular axis.
Your mission
We are looking for an applicant who is strongly motivated in investigating novel aspects of the gut-kidney-cardiovascular interplay using large scale omics-data. In this position as postdoctoral researcher you will be carrying out research in the research group of Professor Johan Ärnlöv at the section of Family Medicine and Primary Care. Planned research projects aims to 1) investigate associations between gut microbiome characteristics and the interplay between kidney and cardiovascular disease; 2) carry out the first-ever urinary microbiome-wide association study in the community and investigate the importance of the urinary microbiome for kidney and cardiovascular disease; 3) perform untargeted analyses of multi-omics data, using supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods in order to get novel insights into underlying system biology leading to kidney and cardiovascular disease. We need to strengthen the expertise on microbiology and bioinformatics of the group.
Moreover, the successful candidate is expected to play a role in grant applications, doctoral students supervision, teaching to undergraduate and graduate students, and in the expansion of the current research line.
The employment as postdoctoral researcher is time limited for 2 years. This is a full-time position.
Your profile
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
The successful candidate is expected:
- 1) to have a PhD in microbiology, or similar topic, no longer than five years ago before the application deadline. Additional degree in bioinformatics is an additional strong merit.
- 2) to have experience of working with various omics data such as microbiomics, proteomics, metabolomics and genomics (including bioinformatics analyses). Excellent skills in R, STATA and/or UNIX/LINUX are important.
- 3) to have a proven track record of diligent, timely academic work in microbiome /epidemiology research. Interest/experience in the importance of the urinary microbiome is a merit.
- 4) to have excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively and productively with other researchers in the team and outside of the team. As the project is a collaborative effort with several national and international research groups, experience in international collaborations within the field is a strong merit.
- 5) to have excellent English language skills in terms of oral and written communication.
Scientific expertise within microbiology/bioinformatics/epidemiology will be most important when assessing applicants.
