The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a world leader in scientific research and at the forefront in the development of cutting-edge technologies and services to the scientific community. EMBL’s headquarter is located in Heidelberg, Germany.

The Science Education and Public Engagement office of EMBL leads and coordinates the institute’s science education programmes and public engagement efforts. Our activities are open to European school science teachers, to young people of all backgrounds aged between 10 and 19 years, and to diverse public audiences. The office is part of EMBL‘s International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT).

To support the delivery of our programme, the Science Education Team is looking to recruit a highly motivated university science or communications student/graduate to join as science communication and education trainee at the EMBL campus in Heidelberg, Germany. This position offers an exciting opportunity to gain experience in science communication and education in an international environment within a leading scientific infrastructure, and to make a real difference to our education programmes offered to young learners and teachers from around the globe. You will join a diverse and friendly team of professionals and will be supported to expand your skill-set and build valuable experience for your CV.

The science communication and education trainee will report to the Science Education Team Lead and will work closely with the Science Education team and with others in the Science Education and Public Engagement office.

Your role

  • Supporting the organisation, implementation and evaluation of events for young learners, teachers and the public on the Heidelberg campus and online
  • Supporting the development of learning material for young learners and teachers
  • Writing engaging news features, content for web, newsletter and social media, and producing promotional material to enhance visibility of the science education programme to audiences world-wide
  • Assisting with administrative tasks to support the implementation of the science education programme, including organising meetings, maintaining databases, preparing presentations and reports
  • Supporting EMBL’s portfolio of Science Education and Public Engagement activities.

You have

  • Are a recent graduate or currently enrolled as student at a university, preferably studying towards a postgraduate degree in an area related to science, science communication, communication studies, or event management
  • Have a passion for the communication of scientific research to diverse audiences
  • Have a strong interest in developing your professional skills in education and teaching, science communication, event management and project management
  • Enjoy interacting with young people, teachers, scientists and visitors of EMBL
  • Are a team player and enjoy contributing to a collaborative work environment
  • Are used to taking initiative and possess strong self-organisation skills
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills, and work on tasks with thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Have excellent working knowledge of written and spoken English.

You might also have

  • Experience in teaching others, producing learning materials, or communicating scientific concepts to non-specialists
  • Experience in organising events
  • Affinity to digital media and experience in using digital workplace tools such as Zoom and Google Suite
  • Proficiency in German or another European language.
