The Role
Applications are invited for a talented, ambitious and productive Research Associate to work on a qualitative and survey study to understand how to improve access to care and pregnancy outcomes using a poverty proofing approach (https://children-ne.org.uk/how-we-can-help/poverty-proofing-services/poverty-proofing-healthcare-settings/).
The project is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) School for Public Health Research (SPHR) and will involve a mapping study of maternity care services, interviews with professionals and women and birthing people with experiences of pregnancy/parenthood on a low income, and survey research to explore the costs of accessing maternity services.
The successful applicant will be working closely with the research leads, Professor Judith Rankin and Dr Ryc Aquino at Newcastle University, as well as with project leads at other SPHR schools in Bristol, Warwick, and Lancaster. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the management of the wider programme of work and support the planning, coordination and delivery of activities.
The post will suit an individual who is planning to develop a career in Public Health Research with a specific focus on health inequalities and marginalised communities. The successful candidate will have a relevant PhD, ideally in the field of public health, maternal health, health inequalities and/or poverty. Required skills will include primarily: service mapping, qualitative interviews, and conducting surveys. The successful candidate will also have experience of writing for high quality peer reviewed journals and will be expected to support day-to-day study management, including engaging with collaborators at all levels of seniority and different sectors of the public health and health care system. You will be self-motivated and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful applicant will be appointed to a suitable point on the common pay scale according to qualifications and experience.
This is a full time post, fixed term for 18 months

Key Accountabilities
• Clear knowledge and experience of qualitative/mixed methods research.
• Prepare applications for ethical review of the project and associated documents.
• Collaborating with other researchers of different levels of experience/seniority in other regions to undertake research deliverables (e.g., mapping exercises)
• Contribute to patient and public involvement activities across the project.
• Contribute to the day to day running of the project.
• Attend meetings and other events appropriate to the project.
• Carry out high quality applied research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and to an appropriate standard.
• Evidence of ability to lead peer-reviewed publications and disseminate findings at conferences nationally and internationally as required.
• Ensure that research activity and data are consistent with current research governance instructions and Data Protection legislation; ensure that research activity and data management meet the demands of new instructions and legislation as these come into effect and keep appropriate records.
• Identify and undertake a programme of professional development, including further training in research methods, development of research proposals or funding bids and other transferable skills.
• Contribute to the activities of the NIHR SPHR at Newcastle University and partner Universities and across other relevant research infrastructures regionally and nationally.
• Work with relevant stakeholders including members of the public to ensure research is relevant to their needs.
• Carry out administrative tasks and other duties to support the Institute and NIHR SPHR as required by line manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Experience of conducting high quality research with marginalised and minoritised populations (women/people living in poverty, children and families, populations with multiple complex needs)
• Experience of qualitative data collection and analysis
• Ability to carry out research project work within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and producing research to an appropriate standard
• Experience of mixed methods data collection and analysis (Desirable)
• Experience of co-production approaches and/or creative methods (Desirable)
• Experience of conducting research in the area of maternal and child health (Desirable)
• Evidence of ability to publish in high quality peer reviewed journals (Desirable)
• Ability to present findings at leading health, public health and social science conferences (Desirable)
• Evidence of skills in using relevant data analysis software packages (Desirable)
• Experience of preparing research proposals for submission to competitive funding organisations (e.g. NIHR, UKRI) (Desirable)
• Experience of work within a context of Public Involvement and/or Public Engagement (PPI/E) (Desirable)

Qualifications
• PhD in a relevant subject such as Public Health, Health Inequalities, Social Sciences (e.g., Psychology Sociology,) or a related field
• A master’s degree or equivalent qualification (Desirable)
