For the NWA-ORC project Re/Presenting Europe, led by Prof. Dr. Rachel Gillet, we are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced project manager who wants to contribute to a study on the history of diversity and inclusion in the Netherlands. The candidate will help manage the project “Re/Presenting Europe: Popular Representations of Diversity and Belonging” which investigates how we produce better knowledge about the many “othered” populations that have shaped Europe for centuries. In the project, we seek to address the trauma and historical impact of the Dutch and European colonial past and create representations that build more inclusive futures. It brings together sub-projects in education and research from postcolonial and globalising perspectives as well as urban arts, hip hop, and sports.
Through a grassroots approach, with close collaboration between scholars and community-based organisations, the project endeavours to make knowledge within major academic and cultural institutions more inclusive. The project has a grant of 4.9 million euros from the Dutch Research Agenda and brings together an interdisciplinary consortium led by cultural historian Rachel Gillett (Utrecht University).
As project manager of Re/Presenting Europe, you will work closely with the lead researcher (PI/Primary investigator) of the project, Prof. Rachel Gillett. You are responsible for structuring and coordinating this interdisciplinary consortium and everything that comes with it.
The range of tasks involved in this position is diverse. Below we give an impression of the tasks that are part of the job (though this list is not exhaustive):
- setting up and maintaining the project administration, including financial management and budgeting, in consultation with the consortium secretary;
- functioning as a contact point within and outside the organisation;
- taking care of the communication processes with the different consortium partners and other stakeholders through various communication platforms, such as Slack and Teams;
- supporting stakeholder management;
- coordinating the project development with the various consortium partners, in consultation with the consortium secretary;
- organising different types of activities, such as conferences, workshops, lectures and presentations;
- maintaining contact with various interest groups and stakeholders outside the consortium;
- assisting in the writing of reports and other correspondence with the grant provider.
Qualifications
Our ideal candidate should have:
- experience in managing complex organisational projects;
- strong communication skills and is used to working and communicating with many different types of organisational cultures;
- strong digital skills and ideally not afraid to work in Excel, Teams, Slack and Mailchimp;
- professional language skills in Dutch and English (native proficiency in Dutch and B2-level CERF of English – or vice versa – is required);
- affinity with the subjects of diversity, representation and exclusivity;
- independence and proactivity.
In addition, it is an advantage if you:
- have a (relevant) master’s degree;
- have experience with science communication or impact development, and/or;
- have experience with local community organisations, and/or;
- have experience with popular music and sports activities.
Offer
This is an appointment for the duration of one year (0.5 FTE). In case of a good performance, extending the employment is one of the possibilities. The minimum gross salary is €3,973 and the maximum gross salary is €3,973 (scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month, at full-time employment.

Research support is one of these chains and consists of three teams: the research support team (grant office), the project support team and the research coordination team. The staff members of these teams support researchers and project leaders with project applications and ongoing projects. Furthermore, they coordinate tasks in the field of research and post-academic education within research institutes, national research schools and expertise centres.
As a project manager, you will be part of the Project Support Team. The members of the Project Support Team provide support for research projects in the various departments of the Humanities Faculty. These include projects funded by the ERC and NWO, as well as government-funded projects.
