The particle physics programme of DESY includes strong contributions to the Belle II experiment at KEK in Japan. The Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe” performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. The research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology at Universität Hamburg and DESY. Pursuing a PhD (requires a master in physics) is optional. Doctoral research associates will become members of the Quantum Universe research school (QURS) and through this receive offers for academic training, soft skills and career planning. Doctoral research associates may actively participate in the organization of the Cluster via an early career council.

This position is at the interface between highly topical physics research and state-of-the art (micro-)electronic systems. It is intended to pursue research within the field of experimental particle and astroparticle physics on real-time data selection for Dark Matter searches using FPGAs. The project is part of a crossdisciplinary joint effort between members of the SuperCDMS collaboration and members of the Belle II collaboration, where the first is a direct Dark Matter search experiment and the second is an e+e- collider experiment. The successful candidate will become a member of Belle II and be in close contact with SuperCDMS researchers. She/he is expected to develop Machine Learning classifier algorithms executing the inference step on FPGAs and to contribute to Belle II data analyses.

Requirements

  • Master in physics, electrical engineering or other relevant fields
  • Hands on experience with FPGAs
  • Interest in programming (C++/Python), machine learning and data analysis
  • Very good teamwork, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability and eligibility to travel to Japan
  • Very good English language skills
