JOB DESCRIPTION

AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is located in Aalborg. 

The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world. 

Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent. 

The position is offered in relation to the research program “Modern Power Transmission Grids” and the Associate Professor will be positioned to the section for “Electric Power Systems and Microgrids”.

Research areas will primarily be within high voltage engineering, insulation coordination and general topics of electric power systems. The candidate must have a strong research background in high voltage engineering and insulation coordination and be able and willing to develop research and teaching in these areas including experimental studies using our High Voltage laboratory.

The applicant should have experiences and capability of leading research projects as well as teaching and supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD students.

More specifically, a successful applicant should document strong ability in the majority of the below listed topics:

  • General high level of knowledge in high voltage engineering disciplines such as discharge theory, electric fields stresses, FEM methods for assessing the E-field, partial discharges and breakdown in solid and gaseous dielectrics.
  • Knowledge on dielectric degradation and lifetime assessment for non-standardized voltage waveforms such as resonant TOV’s and harmonics.
  • Knowledge on insulation behavior and strength and stresses as well as models for lifetime assessment for power electronic converters and their components operating in the medium voltage medium frequency range.
  • Strong skills in using EMT and real time simulation tools for insulation coordination purposes in HVAC and HVDC transmission systems. Special focus will be in the multiterminal HVDC offshore transmission networks.
  • Practical experience in conducting high voltage tests is necessary, including non-destructive tests especially for partial discharge measurement, AC and impulse high voltage generation /measurement and insulation assessment tests.
  • Familiar with 2D/3D multiphysics/electrostatic field simulation based on FEM software, such as ANSYS or COMSOL.
  • Teaching experience is preferred. Teaching will cover both lower semesters BSc and MSc. Main teaching responsibilities will be in the areas of high voltage engineering, fundamental electrical theories, power systems and insulation coordination. It is desired that the applicant has experiences in supervising bachelor and master students.
  • Associate professors should document success in achieving international research grants and will be expected to lead applications for research grants. Experience in PhD supervision is preferred.


The candidate is expected to have a strong publication record in reputed journals and experience in teaching. Teaching activities within the position include lecturing (including laboratory exercises), supervision, coordination, and planning primarily at BSc, MSc and PhD levels secondarily in other study programs at the University. The applicant should envision teaching and student project supervision by using problem-based learning.

Teaching will primarily be in High Voltage, general Power Systems and electrical engineering, but also in other study programs at the University.

The candidate must be responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of our HV laboratory.

Qualification requirements: 

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.
