The Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark, in Odense seeks a suitable candidate for a 3-year position as PhD Research Fellow within the area of theoretical condensed-matter theory for 2D materials with the starting date September 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is supported by a research grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) awarded to Prof. N. Asger Mortensen (SDU) and Prof. Nuno M. R. Peres (University of Minho) for research in “Polaritons in twisted bilayer materials”.

The proposed project is concerned with theoretical explorations of two-dimensional monolayer and bilayer materials that are hosting intriguing electronic and opto-electronic phenomena, where in particular the twist angle of bilayers offering a new knob that can change both single-particle properties as well as many-body properties of the electron system. This has already manifested in the intriguing observation of superconductivity in twisted graphene bilayers. This project expands beyond condensed-matter physics and into the domain of optical sciences by hypothesizing that the twist angle can also be used to manipulate opto-electronic properties. In particular, the project focuses on semiconducting 2D materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) or transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), that can interestingly host excitons even at room temperature. The aim is to theoretically explore the formation of electron-hole pairs in twisted bilayers and to investigate how the excitons manifest in polaritons when hybridized with light fields.

Potential candidates for the fully funded 3-year PhD-scholarship are expected to have a relevant MSc degree in physics or engineering and with expertise in condensed-matter theory.

Candidates should motivate their application in a cover letter.

Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master’s degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).

Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at SDU in accordance with Faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order), read more here
