Associate professor
The Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion at the University of Bergen invites applications for a permanent position as associate professor in Cultural Studies.
The Bergen version of Cultural Studies focuses on everyday culture in past and present. The discipline is embedded in the academic traditions of Ethnology and Folkloristics, which have had a particular focus on Nordic cultures. The research traditions of these disciplines have been continued into a broad approach to historical as well as contemporary cultural analysis and cultural studies. Research is carried out in combination with teaching on bachelor, master and PhD-level. Currently there are 6 permanent positions in Cultural Studies.
Qualification requirements and work tasks
The successful applicant must have relevant research competence in ethnology, folkloristics, cultural history or cultural studies within the profile outlined, corresponding to the level of a Norwegian PhD.
The applicant must have research competence in sustainability and perceptions of nature, with a focus on cultural historical perspectives on the uses of natural resources, for instance traditional agriculture, land use, human-animal relationships, or notions of how traditional agriculture inspires contemporary phenomena such as urban gardening, community-supported agriculture and sharing economy. In assessing applications, publications within the last five years will carry the most weight. Experience in attracting external funding will also be given emphasis.
The position has teaching, research, outreach, and administrative components. The applicant must be able to teach and supervise students at all levels. In addition, it is expected that the applicants will be able to develop courses within the field of environmental humanities and collaborate with researchers from other disciplines at the Department of AHKR and other departments at the University of Bergen.
The successful applicant will have the right and the duty to conduct research within their specialty and will be assigned some academic administrative work.
Basic teaching training and experience in the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor. This consists of completed formal pedagogical training, as well as basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. Relevant courses in combination with actual teaching experience could replace a university pedagogy program. Should the successful applicant not have such competence at the time of appointment, they will be required to document such training within two years of the date of appointment.
Pedagogical training must be documented in a pedagogical portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence, as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s teaching philosophy and an evaluation of their own teaching in relation to their knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level. Personal aptitude will be of great importance. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to work collaboratively, on the applicant’s research in progress, as well as on the potential to strengthen the department’s academic profile over the coming years.
Norwegian will normally be the language of administration and teaching. The successful applicant will be required to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years of being appointed. The university provides suitable courses for learning Norwegian.
The successful candidate will be expected to relocate to Bergen, to work and participate in the day-to-day operations of the department and to conform to the regulations that apply to the position.
We can offer:
- Salary in accordance with pay grade 68-72 (code 1011/frame 24) on the State Salary Scale (currently NOK 636.300-688.700 gross p.a.). From the gross wage a 2 % law-enforced membership in the State Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse) is deducted. Further increase in salary will depend on seniority. Higher initial placement may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
