Project: FENICE (Functional carbon dots for ENhancing tomato production In a Circular Economy scheme)

Commitment & contract: temporary contract, full time, 2 years

Location: Center for Nano Science and Technology, IIT@PoliMI, Via G. Pascoli 70/3, Milano

ABOUT US

At IIT we work enthusiastically to develop human-centered Science and Technology to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times and transfer these technologies to the production system and society. Our Genoa headquarters are strictly interconnected with the other 11 centers around Italy and two outstations based in the US. We promote excellence in basic and applied research such as neuroscience and cognition, humanoid technologies and robotics, nanotechnology, materials for a truly multidisciplinary scientific experience.

YOUR TEAM

You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where physicists, engineers, materials scientists, biotechnologists and biologists collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research. This position is funded by Fondazione Cariplo in the framework of the project FENICE (2021-0626).

The Nanomaterials for Energy and Life Science (NEL) Research line, coordinated by Prof. G. Lanzani, has extensive experience in the development, characterization and optimization of new materials and bio-hybrid interfaces for optical control of physiological activity. The successful candidate will work within the subgroup, led by Dr. M. R. Antognazza, mariarosa.antognazza@iit.it, focusing on biomaterials for applications in regenerative medicine and plant systems.

The research focuses on the development of innovative technologies for precision agriculture, by developing an integrated actuating/sensing device for selective, in vivo control of biological activity in plant systems. In more detail, the project will implement carbon-based nanomaterials and devices for enhancement of photosynthesis, tomato plants productivity, nutrients adsorption and water consumption, in the framework of a fully circular agronomy scheme. To target this ambitious goal, day-by-day collaboration with FENICE partners, experts in green chemistry, organic synthesis and agronomy sector, is planned.

Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:

  • To characterize the electrical, photo-chemical and photo-physical properties of synthesized nanomaterials;
  • To implement effective strategies for optimizing formulation and delivery of nanomaterials in plants
  • To collaborate with project partners to critically evaluate the efficacy of the approach and to validate its sustainability.

This open position/research is financed by Fondazione Cariplo within the FENICE project.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
