The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Vice Chair, Culture and Inclusion. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment in the Department of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The term of appointment is five years, renewable once following a successful review. Effective start date will be October 1, 2022, or as mutually agreed upon.

The Vice-Chair, Culture and Inclusion is a senior leadership position within the Department of Medicine, reporting directly to the Chair of Medicine. The Vice Chair, Culture and Inclusion has a mandate to advance the department’s Culture and Inclusion strategic priority, which is to create a clinical and academic environment that promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), mutual respect, compassion, integrity, and belonging, and thus fosters the wellbeing of our faculty and learners. This role reflects the importance of past and ongoing work in equity, wellness, mentorship, inclusion and advocacy in medicine and medical education; the  success of this portfolio is pivotal to the overall success of the department.

The ideal candidate is an aspirational and inspirational leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, proven success in fostering a diverse and collaborative academic environment and a track record of activity and scholarship in a field relevant to the Culture and Inclusion portfolio’s mandate. It is especially important that experience in working in EDI initiatives impacting Black and Indigenous and other marginalized communities be demonstrated. The Vice Chair, Culture and Inclusion will focus on mentorship across the academic lifespan; equity, diversity and inclusion; faculty wellness and other important DOM initiatives. They will meaningfully engage the academic leadership of the University, engage with the membership of the Deptartment and affiliated teaching hospitals, and will build a culture in which all stakeholders – learners and faculty members – will thrive. They will build strong city-wide collaborations, bridge diverse groups, and foster excellence through equity.

The Department of Medicine is one of the largest in North America, with over 900 full-time faculty members, 1,000 postgraduate trainees, and 20 sub-specialty divisions located across 6 fully affiliated hospitals, 6 community-affiliated hospitals and more than a dozen additional clinical practice sites. Applicants must hold an MD degree, be eligible for certification in internal medicine or a medicine subspecialty by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure in Ontario. The preferred hospital site for the Vice Chair, Culture and Inclusion, will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be one of the University’s fully-affiliated sites: Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University Health Network, Sinai Health System – Mt Sinai Hospital, Unity Health Toronto – St. Michael’s Hospital, or Women’s College Hospital. The Vice Chair, Culture and Inclusion, will receive administrative support and an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine. Applications will be accepted until September 9, 2022.
