Course number and title: CTL3008H – Critical Pedagogy, Language and Cultural Diversity

Course description: Linguistic and cultural diversity have always characterized human societies and have usually played a central role in mediating power relations between dominant and subordinate groups. In recent years, theorists working within the framework of Critical Pedagogy have begun to describe how societal power relations are manifested in schools both through interpersonal interactions and the hidden curriculum. In particular, theory has focused on how language use and language learning interact with dimensions such as class, race, ethnicity, and gender in mediating power relations within the educational system. The course will focus on this body of theory and research and explore its applications to current educational issues related to minority students in both Canadian and international contexts.

Salary: As of September 1, 2022, the minimum stipend is $8,489.67 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. As of January 1, 2023, the minimum stipend is $8,489.67 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. Salary may be prorated based on the appointment percentage.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should possess a doctorate degree in a relevant discipline and demonstrated currency and mastery of the subject area. Mastery may be demonstrated, but not limited to scholarly publications establishing expertise in the area.

Preferred Qualifications: Over and above the minimum qualifications, preference will be given to individuals with prior graduate teaching experience in this area. Prior experience teaching online is an asset and should be highlighted in your application cover letter.

Description of duties: Prepare, organize, and teach this half-course graduate seminar; be available to students seeking assistance between classes; evaluate and provide students with feedback on their work.
