Course description: Various courses in the design spine in both Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; may include MIE242, MIE243, MIE344, MIE350, MIE490/491.

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2022– December 31, 2022 

Hours: 0.5 HCE (up to a maximum of 115 hrs) 

Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are: Sessional Lecturer 1 – $8,489.67; Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term – $8,869.25; Sessional Lecturer 2 – $9,085.58; and Sessional Lecturer 3 – $9,301.90. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail. 

Minimum Qualifications: include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Education, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies), TESL or CESLA certificate (or equivalent in ESL specialization or development of ESL curricula), with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. 

Preferred Qualifications: include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), familiarity with engineering communication practices and/or experience as an instructor in first year foundation course, Engineering Strategies and Practice. Also considered assets are experience in curriculum development, tutoring and/or working with a diverse group of students. 

Description of duties:  

  • Work with the teaching team to develop supports for DELNA Band 1 and 2 students in the course  
  • Work with Teamwork & Communication Instructors, Engineering Faculty and TAs to understand specific course requirements and deliverables, provide guidance on assignments, marking and supporting students 
  • Run PLD diagnostics on individual assignments, provide individual support as indicated 
  • Observe teams in tutorials for teamwork oral language proficiency and provide feedback and support as necessary 
  • Ability to convert to online duties if required.
