Position Overview

The Faculty of Social Work is currently seeking a Part-time Limited Term Research Associate, Academic Lead for approximately 2 years.

Reporting to the Associate Dean (Research & Partnerships) or delegate, this position is housed in the Faculty of Social Work and in partnership with Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre (CYAC). The research is interdisciplinary and must reflect the complexity of the partnerships and stakeholders that represents the model at Luna, University of Calgary and Child Advocacy Centres.

The Research Associate, Academic Lead will develop and maintain contacts between Luna and the University of Calgary, overseeing the development of the Research Collaboration resources, contracts and programs for long-term sustainability.  The incumbent will represent and promote Luna to potential partners/collaborators and facilitates the development and implementation of the Luna Knowledge Hub by providing expert advice and guidance to the UCalgary/Luna team. The Research Associate, Academic Lead will work closely with the Luna CYAC team to help create and develop the Luna Knowledge Hub through significant engagement with sector policy makers, academic institutions, and other research and practitioner leaders

The incumbent will normally work Monday to Friday, 17 hours per week with the occasional work outside of regular hours.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Collaborates regularly and closely with Luna, Child Advocacy Centres, researchers, participants in meetings as required or to conduct research, obtain and verify results.
  • Regularly updates research team members, Director, Research (Luna), and senior leadership members on data collection and analysis, as well as prepares and presents reports of these results using excellent technical writing skills.
  • Follows set guidelines for complettion of data anaylsis and recommends changes to research methods as necessary.
  • Provides advice and guidance on Tri-Council grants and assists the Director of Research and Evaluation and other team members with submissions of funding grants to facilitate a long-term sustainable research program.
  • Delivers the most effective programs and best outcomes for children and families through research methods.
  • Collaborates with the Research Director and Luna research team to ensure that the research program being developed is connected to practice and program evaluation.
  • Connects and partners with the research community, stakeholders and partners.
  • Uses research data to create effective prevention and intervention models in child maltreatment.
  • Mentors student researchers on data collection, data analysis and data storage following FOIP regulations.
  • Shares and coordinates data results with partner organizations and systems.
  • Ensures that all work conducted is in accordance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code and other health and safety legislation as applicable.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of a post-graduate degree in a relevant social science field (social work, criminology, social policy) is required.
  • Sound knowledge in the design and implementation of research and evaluation in a social science field is required.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of research and evaluation initiatives in a social science field is required.
  • Familiarity with Canada’s Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans, particularly with respect to participants considered to be vulnerable.
  • Sound knowledge of child and adolescent development, trauma, child abuse, the child protection system, the Criminal Justice System, and violence prevention.
  • Minimum six years of research experience in the fields noted above is required.
  • Familiarity with the current academic research related to child abuse, including technology-assisted exploitation is required.
  • Familiarity with the Child & Youth Advocacy Centre model, and related research and evaluation an asset.
  • Ability to determine the feasibility of the evaluation component as part of a funding application. Experience designing presentations and public speaking to both small and large groups.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills for a minimum of 3 years.
  • Proficient database management skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with teams of multidisciplinary professionals.
  • Proven ability to engage, build working partnerships and very strong interpersonal skills with stakeholders, including staff, board members and external partners.
  • Demonstrated qualitative and quantitative research skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated proficiency in effectively communicating ideas to research teams, social sector representatives, and people with lived experience to inform research and the development of policy advice.
  • Proficient computer skills, including solid working experience using relevant technology such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, the Internet is required. Experience with Peoplesoft is a strong asset.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills for collection, maintenance and organization of information data.
  • Ability to work independently on projects, from conception to completion, and to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.\
  • Ability to employ self-care strategies and maintain a calm demeanor and positive attitude in relation to potentially stressful situations.
