Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

The Research Associate will play a critical role in the high level leadership of the research group, working closely with the Principal Investigators, other research assistants in Calgary, Calgary Tuberculosis Clinic Management, Provincial Tuberculosis Director, Edmonton Tuberculosis Clinic, research assistant in Edmonton, and the Alberta tuberculosis pharmacy team, to operationalize, recruit, follow, and report to the McGill/CDC funded research.

The position of Research Associate is a fixed-term appointment for 12 months, 25-35 hours per week with opportunity for renewal. There is an option for the position FTE to start at 0.7 or 1.0, as there is an additional opportunity to participate in pulmonary hypertension research along with tuberculosis research. The FTE will be determined depending on project needs and the candidate’s interest.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Along with the Principal Investigator, develop and implement the strategic vision of the research project(s) and research group
  • Assessment and monitoring of patients receiving latent tuberculosis infection treatment at Calgary Tuberculosis Clinic as per standard practice in the control arm of this study.
  • Assessment and monitoring medication side effects of latent tuberculosis infection treatment (control and intervention arm)
  • Report patient visit and medication side effects as per Calgary Tuberculosis Clinic and provincial data reporting requirements
  • Recruit latent tuberculosis patients as per protocol
  • Completion of ethics applications, reporting to McGill team, and submitting bimonthly reports Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of all contract deliverables and project closure
  • Act as primary liaison between research team, national, and international collaborators Represent research team at national and international meetings, conferences, and seminars.
  • Monitor and control the schedule, budget, quality and risk of projects undertaken by the research team
  • Make high risk decisions that may impact the scope, budget, and schedule of large projects
  • Full responsibility for quality control
  • Conduct research and provide documentation for use in scholarly publications
  • Monitor and control the financial health of the group; track spending and intervene to maximize cost effectiveness of the group activities when required
  • Participate in high level funding and research strategy sessions

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in nursing, pharmacy epidemiology required. Technical experience with Alberta Public Health system (iPHIS) and Connect Care preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience
  • Project management skills preferred
  • Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide technical support for others through consultation on research issues
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, innovation, and interpersonal skills Advanced or expert skills in MS Office Suite, Internet
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of the team
  • WHIMIS certification
