Position Overview

The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term Full-time position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Alberta Biomonitoring Manager.

They are involved in lab research and development activities related to the Alberta Biomonitoring project, including the preparation of reports and publications for research projects. The position is also involved in other research and development work at the ACFT and other duties as assigned.

Position is primarily involved in laboratory LC-MS/MS research and development activities. The focus is to help design, develop, and conduct scientific studies as well as analyze the resulting data and publish reports and scientific articles based on the work. The position has project management and training responsibilities to guide junior staff. This position may also be involved in research and development work and other duties as determined by the Directors and Manger.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for planning and managing the projects assigned by the Directors and Manager
  • Responsible for development and implementation of highly complex analytical methods and troubleshoot problems
  • Recommend changes to current methods, procedures and practices within the lab
  • Training and supervising junior staff members and trainees in the operation protocols
  • Coaching and monitoring staff for day-to-day research and operational activities
  • Provide mentorship and role model for other staff
  • Responsible for data analysis and review
  • Assist in quality control/quality assurance
  • Preparation for and compliance with accreditation agencies
  • Conduct literature review, data analysis and interpretation
  • Prepare and present research findings at national and international meetings, conferences, and seminars
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participation in collaborative research projects with other researchers
  • Prepare and contribute to project proposals for funding agencies
  • Effective communication with stakeholders, customers and team members for project delivery and inquiries
  • Exercise sound judgment within established guidelines
  • Ensure a safe and efficient work environment

Research Associate is trained to perform a range of tasks. With staff shortages, the position may be asked to fill in for other Research and Development staff and be trained to perform duties not normally part of their routine job assignments.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD or MSc in chemistry or related disciplines
  • A minimum of 3 years of related experience with a PhD and a minimum of 5 years of experience with a MSc
  • Extensive knowledge in highly complex analytical methods including LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, ICP-MS and ICP-MS/MS
  • Knowledge in statistical analysis and statistic packages
  • Experience with human biomonitoring, environmental toxicology or clinical toxicology
  • Experience with project management
  • Ability to prepare and deliver scientific presentations, communication and peer-reviewed publications
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong organizational, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills
  • Open to learning and development, willingness to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
