Position Overview

The Department of CSM Grants in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Research Grants Development Officer.

Will report to the Manager, Grant Development.

The Research Grants Development Officer (GDO) provides leadership to support primarily the funding applications to the CIHR priority-driven initiatives and other large health related funding opportunities, across all four pillars of health research. They will work as part of the team in the Grant Development Office on a daily basis and assist with grant reviews and preparation at peak tri-council operating grant competitions (i.e. CIHR Project and Foundation, NSERC Discovery Grant, SSHRC Insight Grant) to ensure full breadth of support services.

This position is complex in nature and requires the ability to manage multiple, often competing, deadlines. The incumbent must deal with diverse stakeholders, including over 500 full time and 2500 clinical/adjunct faculty members across 20 departments, 7 Research Institutes, University administrators, and research funding agencies.

The primary purpose of this position is to increase the competitiveness of CSM researchers in successfully applying for research funding, with priority for CIHR priority-driven initiatives and secondarily for other health related large scale funding opportunities. The job requires excellent communication skills in order to clearly describe and explain complex funding application guidelines and procedures, providing criteria and editorial review for grant applications, and managing research related initiatives and resources through the CSM Office of the Associate Dean Research.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Keep apprised and communicate new and emerging funding opportunities to all interested stakeholders (i.e. faculty members, teams, and research support staff within institutes/departments), as appropriate
  • Provide leadership in providing strategic development of grant proposals for faculty research, and managing resources available through the CSM OADR
  • Work in concert with the CSM OADR and University Research Services Office to coordinate research grant submissions in line with University of Calgary policies and procedures (i.e. internal approvals)
  • Provide editorial and criteria review to ensure research is communicated effectively in line with University and funding agency policy/guidelines
  • Devise and promote new ways to increase collaborative research interactions within CSM and outside of the university to increase research competitiveness
  • Attend training opportunities that arise in grant development and research administration to maintain continued education, with potential travel to appropriate conferences and other university sites to build networks and share strategies on grant development
  • Become familiar with research areas and programs of faculty members and CSM research institutes through participation in institute research days, one-on-one or small group sessions to learn of different research areas to facilitate targeting of specific grant opportunities
  • Recognize and protect sensitive information contained in grant proposals, including confidential research plans, intellectual property, and faculty, staff and graduate student salary details
  • Recognize the impact of mishandling such information in terms of liability, potential loss of research funding and reputational damage to CSM and the University of Calgary
  • Inform budget calculations to ensure requested budget reflects current predictions of costs, recommending and implementing improvements as appropriate
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor, senior management, and with the campus community
     

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree, required
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years related experience in Research and Development, in building collaborative research teams and multi-disciplinary and/or multi-institutional research proposals for provincial, national and international agencies
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be considered
  • Strong internal candidates will be given priority
  • Direct experience developing tri-council funding applications and strong knowledge of the academic research funding landscape
  • Directly related experience in building collaborative research teams and multi-disciplinary and/or multi-institutional research proposals for provincial, national and international agencies
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Grant writing experience considered an asset
  • Experience with budget development for grant applications, for all pillars of health research
  • Experience working with or alongside Alberta Health Services, or other provincial health authority, considered an asset
  • Advanced analytical, organization, planning, and decision-making skills
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of research policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and funding agencies
  • Experience in developing policy, guidelines and research evaluation processes for senior leaders within a research-focused setting
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, act decisively and to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment on a wide range of issues, using discretion and maintaining confidentiality
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
