Course description: This is a seminar course that examines the interactions between teachers and children in kindergarten, primary and junior grade educational settings. Emphasis is placed on the integration of teaching practice with Social Studies curriculum and social learning theories. Students learn instructional methods (planning, learning environment, classroom management) and pedagogies for elementary teaching. The law, legislations and government policies for education are explored and tied to professionalism and professional practice. This course draws on students’ experiences from practicum placements and is connected to the practicum course. Theory and practice are well connected through scholarly readings and practicum experience.

Salary: As of September 1, 2022, the minimum stipend is $8,489.67 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. As of January 1, 2023, the minimum stipend is $8,489.67 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. Salary may be prorated based on the appointment percentage.
Minimum Qualifications:
1 -Doctorate degree or equivalent in curriculum or related area of expertise with a focus on elementary pedagogy;
2 – Expertise in critical pedagogy;
3 – Expertise in teaching at University level;
4 – Experience teaching at the elementary level is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
1 – Experience teaching at the elementary level;
2 – Knowledge of Social Studies curriculum and Environmental Studies content;
3 – Knowledge of Teacher Education;
4 – Ability to collaborate with faculty and university community members.
Description of duties:
1 – Teach a minimum of 72 hours.
2 – Prepare teaching resources for each class and provide relevant materials.
3 – Assess and evaluate students’ work and provide a final course grade according to OISE/UT grading practices.
4 – Be available for informal meetings/communications with students as necessary.
