Course number and title: PPG200H1F – Microeconomics for Policy Analysis

Course description

This is a course in microeconomic theory for policy analysis. The objectives of this course are:

(1) To provide students with a foundation in microeconomic analysis and
(2) To demonstrate how this foundation can be applied to design, predict the effects of, and evaluate public policies.

After taking this course, students will be better equipped to understand the main issues on a broad array of topics, from taxation and social insurance policies to welfare and income support programs. For example, this course will provide students with the tools that are necessary to evaluate fundamental questions such as: What are the key factors that determine the shape of the “”optimal”” income tax schedule? Why should the government provide health and unemployment insurance and what are the benefits and costs of such intervention? What are the efficiency consequences of food stamps vs. cash welfare?

The course will be divided into 4 units: (1) The Market and Consumer Behavior, (2) Producer Behavior (The Theory of the Firm), (3) Market Equilibrium in a Perfectly Competitive Economy, (4) Market Failures and Social Welfare.

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022


Salary: Sessional Lecturer I – $8,489.67; Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term – $8,869.25; Sessional Lecturer II – $9,085.58; Sessional Lecturer III – $9,301.90

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.


Qualifications: Graduate degree in econmics required, with specialization in public policy. Extensive and senior professional policy practitioner experience required. Teaching experience at the graduate or undergraduate level required. 

Description of duties: Teaching at the undergraduate level, developing the syllabus, teaching two-hour classes, providing supervision of weekly tutorials, and office hours for academic counseling of students, preparing and delivering course material, preparing and delivering assignments and tests, marking student work and submitting grades, and supervising TA(s) if applicable.
