Course number and title: PPG301H1F – Introduction to Public Policy 

Course description: The PPG301H1 course introduces students to the study of public policy and the policy process. The course will proceed in two parts. First, the course will explore foundational theories of policy making that seek to capture the role of political actors and organized interests, the importance of political institutions, and the influence of ideas and ideology. Part two builds on this theoretical foundation through examination of the policy cycle. It will focus on each specific “stage” of the policy process investigating how policy issues emerge, how agendas are set, how programs are designed and implemented, and outcomes evaluated.

Class schedule: Tuesday, 5–7pm

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022


Salary: Sessional Lecturer I – $8,489.67; Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term – $8,869.25; Sessional Lecturer II – $9,085.58; Sessional Lecturer III – $9,301.90

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.


Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in the field of Political Science or Sociology required. Demonstrated leadership experience in this subject matter in the public sector required.

Preferred qualifications: Two years of teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level preferred.

Description of duties: Teaching at the undergraduate level, developing the syllabus, teaching two-hour classes, providing supervision of weekly tutorials, and office hours for academic counseling of students, preparing and delivering course material, preparing and delivering assignments and tests, marking student work and submitting grades.
