Course number and title: PPG401H1S – The Role of Government  

Course description: The PPG401H1 course explores the complexity of current government policymaking in comparative perspective. Students will examine the rationales for and the limits to government intervention and will identify the policy levers available to government actors in a dynamic political context. The course explores the government’s role in the financing and delivery of public policy goals while balancing concerns of efficiency and equity. Students will explore substantive and procedural issues in a range of major policy areas such as trade, security, redistribution, health care, the environment, indigenous peoples issues and urban policy.

Class schedule: Thursday, 1–4 pm

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2023 – April 30, 2022


Salary: Sessional Lecturer I – $8,489.67; Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term – $8,869.25; Sessional Lecturer II – $9,085.58; Sessional Lecturer III – $9,301.90

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.


Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. studies the field of Political Science and a Masters in Public Policy required. Demonstrated leadership experience in this subject matter in the public sector required.

Preferred qualifications: Three years of teaching or TA experience at the undergraduate or graduate level preferred.

Description of duties: Teaching at the undergraduate level, developing the syllabus, teaching three-hour classes, providing supervision of weekly tutorials, and office hours for academic counseling of students, preparing and delivering course material, preparing and delivering assignments and tests, marking student work and submitting grades.
