The Department of Physics is one of the biggest departments within the Faculty of Science and supports a broad range of basic research in experimental and theoretical physics. It has about 250 employees of which 95 are PhD students. Many have been internationally recruited. The Department is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which apart from the Department of Physics houses the Department of Astronomy, the Physics Departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita).

The Department of Physics and Stockholm University is affiliated to Stockholm Dual Career Network (SDCN) that supports expat partners with professional events, career-related advice and by building a social network in their new hometown, www.sdcn.se.

Project description
The project will be carried out within the experimental particle physics group at Stockholm University, which is a part of the Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics, and will be focused on analysis of the high energy proton-proton collisions collected with the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. The Stockholm group has been active in the construction, commissioning and calibration of several ATLAS detector components: the Tile Calorimeter and the First Level Trigger system and continues to carry responsibilities in these areas.

The group is also involved in several combined performance groups, e.g. the flavour tagging group and Jet/Etmiss groups, as well as in the data preparation area where we play a leading role in the luminosity determination using Inner Detector tracks. The group currently consists of seven faculty members, three postdocs and eight PhD students. Our main research topics are searches for supersymmetry, dark matter and Higgs pair production as well as measurements in the top-quark sector.

Main responsibilities
The successful applicants to this position are expected to

  • participate in our ATLAS data analysis efforts in the areas of supersymmetry and Higgs pair production, as well as other BSM searches related to third generation particles
  • contribute to the activities in the flavour tagging and luminosity groups
  • assist when necessary in the supervision of master students and PhD students
  • primarily be based at the Department of Physics in Stockholm, but substantial presence at CERN can be discussed.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. We seek a self-motivated candidate who wishes to take a leading role in our research programme. Previous experience within ATLAS, data analysis and programming skills, expertise in experimental analysis techniques relevant to the project, as well as experience with b-tagging or luminosity determination is considered as an advantage but is not required. A suitable background is a PhD in experimental or theoretical particle physics.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date in the second half of 2022 or as per agreement.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
