The University of Amsterdam is hiring an Assistant Professor in Temporal Geometric Computer Vision and Machine Learning, who is also interested in extending research to medical data. The position is associated with the POP-AART Lab (Partnership for Online Personalized AI-driven Adaptive Radiation Therapy), a research ICAI collaboration with the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), and Elekta. You are expected to work on fundamental aspects of temporality and geometry in computer vision and machine learning, with practical applications on medical spatiotemporal and geometric data with CT and MRI imaging.

You will be appointed as the Scientific Manager of the POP-AART Lab and will be responsible for executing the daily activities in the lab and co-supervising the lab’s six PhD. The PhD projects cover: Deep Generative Learning for Cone Beam Computed Tomography, Learning Inverse Models for Cone Beam Computed Tomography Reconstruction, Deep Learning Geometry for 3D Medical Image Registration, Interactive Deep Learning for Medical Segmentation, Learning to Forecast for Adaptive Radiation Therapy, Reinforcement Learning for Radiation Treatment Plan optimization.

In terms of teaching, you are expected to contribute to strengthening the curriculum in computer vision and deep learning of the Bachelor and Master AI and related programs such as the bachelor and master Information Systems. The total teaching load will be around 30%. You should have a broad interest in medical AI, computer vision and machine learning, which means that you must be able to teach a wide variety of AI, vision and learning courses in both BSc and MSc.

What are you going to do

You are going to carry out AI research in association with the projects mentioned above, as part of the POP-AART Lab at the University of Amsterdam and the Netherlands Cancer Institute. You will be appointed as the POP-AART Lab manager and will be responsible for daily activities in close cooperation with Dr. Efstratios Gavves, Associate Professor in the Video & Image Sense lab (VIS, led by Prof. C. Snoek), and with the Adaptive Radiotherapy group of Prof. J.J. Sonke. There will be regular visits to and interactions with the researchers at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) and Elekta.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Develop new theories and algorithms for modelling temporality and geometry in computer vision and machine learning, within the context of the lab’s research projects as well as by developing your own independent research line;
  • acquire independent funding from sources, examples being via the national funding agency NWO (e.g. VIDI), via EU funding (e.g. ERC Starting Grant), and industry;
  • function as the Scientific Lab manager responsible for daily activities in close cooperation with the directors;
  • collaborate with the PhD students within the POP-AART Lab and researchers of Elekta. This includes helping Elekta writing patent applications to protect inventions from the lab when requested;
  • regularly present intermediate research results at top-tier international conferences and workshops, and publish them in proceedings and journals;
  • organize and execute relevant teaching activities;
  • contribute to the organization of the POP-AART Lab, the institute, and the faculty, when requested.

What do you have to offer

Your experience and profile:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline (AI, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Medical Imaging, Electrical Engineering,) and a proven record of high quality and diverse academic teaching, preferably at the Bachelor’s-, Master’s- and PhD-levels;
  • a solid publication record in fields related to computer vision, deep learning and machine learning, including top-tier international conferences (CVPR, ICCV, ICLR, NeurIPS, MIDL, MICCAI, MEDIA, etc.) and/or journals published by internationally recognized press;
  • the ability to obtain research funding in a competitive environment;
  • management skills required for general academic administration, organization and coordination tasks;
  • demonstrated ability to promote outstanding and innovative research and foster research collaborations (with faculty, postdoctoral researchers and PhD candidates);
  • demonstrated or academic leadership;
  • you excel in teaching and have a clear vision on education, as well as the ability to supervise MSc and PhD candidates;
  • in possession of the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (or foreign equivalent), or willingness to acquire such a qualification within two years.

At least two years of postdoctoral experience is expected but not strictly necessary. International research experience is also preferred.

Our offer

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week with a tenure track agreement for the duration of 5 years (which is part of a 6-year temporary contract). The preferred starting date is to be discussed. You will be offered a permanent position after positive assessment and evaluation.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between €2,846 to €5,230 (scale 11). This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% year-end allowance. The UFO profile Assistant Professor (UD) is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.

Within the POP-AART lab six PhD researchers develop novel AI strategies for improving radiation treatment. These involve deep learning and incorporating data in online and automated treatment plan optimization.
