Together, we can create a sustainable future through knowledge and innovation. We believe that knowledge and new perspectives are best attained and reached together in collaboration with others – our colleagues, students, the private and public sectors, both nationally and internationally.
Around 20 000 students are currently studying courses and programmes with us in the various domains. We offer education in areas such as design and communication, economics, health, engineering and technology, preschool and compulsory school teacher training as well as in chamber music and opera. In most of our areas we also offer programmes entirely taught in English. We conduct research in all disciplinary domains and our research in Future Energy and Embedded Systems is internationally prominent.

Mälardalen University is located in Sweden, on both sides of Lake Mälaren, with campuses in Eskilstuna and Västerås. Mälardalen is a region dominated by strong growth with several multinational companies based here such as ABB, Volvo, Westinghouse, Alstom and Northvolt. We enjoy close cooperation with the region’s private sector, municipalities, and county councils.

At the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering our students are studying to be for example innovators, entrepreneurs, illustrators, communications officers, network technicians and engineers. Here we have the research specialisations of Embedded Systems, and Innovation and Product Realisation. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.

Position description

A position as Associate Senior Lecturer is a fixed-term merit-rated appointment of at least four and at no more than six years in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 12a.

The purpose of the employment is that the teacher shall be given the opportunity to develop his or her autonomy as a researcher and to become qualified both academically and pedagogically to fulfil the requirements for appointment as a Senior Lecturer.

The associate senior lecturer will teach undergraduate or graduate courses at MDU, and conduct research in the areas of Computer Science and Computer Engineering. The research will be mainly focused on modeling, verification and validation of various kinds of complex systems, by developing, adapting and applying techniques backed by mathematics, for ensuring that systems behave as intended. The associate senior lecturer will be part of the Formal Modeling and Analysis of Embedded Systems group and will work closely with PhD students, senior researchers, and industrial partners.

Qualification requirements

The qualification requirements for appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer are primarily a degree of Doctor, or equivalent academic skills, no more than five years before the closing date for application for the post of Associate Senior Lecturer has expired.

A person who has a degree of Doctor, or has previously acquired equivalent skills may, however, be considered if there are particular reasons for this. Such particular reasons may leave of absence on account of illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background and experience in formal methods, with an emphasis on both theoretical contributions and their application to industrial-relevant areas. Provable achievements (e.g.  publications, tools) that require good knowledge of techniques such as satisfiability modulo theories (SMT), model checking or theorem proving are required. Some degree of experience with participating in national or international projects is required, as well as basic knowledge of cyber-physical systems and of how computing devices operate in networked environments. Good knowledge of programming is necessary, alongside with a provable capacity to learn and adapt to new technical contexts. Provable experience with teaching undergraduate or graduate courses, as well as fluency in spoken and written English are also required.

The applicant should have completed ten weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge. A person appointed as an Associate Senior Lecturer but lacking training in higher education teaching and learning will be offered in-house training within two and a half years. The course in higher education teaching and learning at Mälardalen University corresponds to ten weeks of training.

The qualification requirements for appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer requires you to fulfil the requirements for a Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Appointments Procedure for Mälardalen University.

To be qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer the applicant must have demonstrated the academic skills and teaching abilities required for the appointment. Academic skills may also have been demonstrated by the ability to achieve results in research through collaboration in joint projects of benefit to academia and industry/the public sector/society in general and through the ability to disseminate research.

The assessment of teaching skills shall apply to the planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination. Teaching skills shall be well documented in such a way that their quality can also be assessed.

Assessment criteria

In general terms the assessment criteria shall be based on the ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to fulfil the duties well.

With regard to the nature of this merit-rated employment, the applicant’s academic and teaching merits will be assessed above all in respect of quality. A quantitative precedent of an applicant, which can be explained by the applicant having worked for a longer period, will therefore not be decisive.

The candidate’s research merits, as well as teaching merits will be equally assessed. Excellent research results in formal methods, e.g. publications in prestigious computer science or computer engineering venues (conferences and journals), and skills of developing tools that facilitate the use of formal methods will be assessed. The potential of applying the research results to industrial contexts will also be considered. A solid teaching portfolio should demonstrate the teaching experience and merits in undergraduate or graduate education. The ability of the candidate to cooperate with peers will also be included in the assessment.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.

Meriterande

Experience with supervising at least one Ph.D. student is considered a merit, as well as fluency in Swedish.
