Job Offer from July 25, 2023

The Fritz Haber Institute (FHI) in Berlin is one of the oldest and most renowned research institutes within Germany’s Max Planck Society (MPG). Bringing together scientists from all over the world, the FHI engages in fundamental research in the fields of physics and chemistry at interfaces and surfaces.

The FHI Theory department is currently looking to fill several PhD and Postdoctoral positions (m/f/d) to advance our understanding in electronic and ionic transport processes at interfaces in energy storage and conversion materials and to improve the modeling capabilities for the realistic description of such processes by first and second principles using bleeding-edge electronic-structure theory and machine-learning approaches.

The PhD positions are initially limited to three years, the Postdoc positions to one year.

Your profile

We expect candidates to have:

  • A Master degree (PhD positions) / a PhD (Postdoc positions) in natural sciences (i.e. Chemistry, Physics, or Materials Science) preferably with a specialization in theoretical or solid-state chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry, or energy science.
  • An appropriate track-record in first-author scientific publications for Postdoc applications.
  • Experience with electronic-structure theory and/or machine-learning codes.
  • High willingness to learn and master novel computational approaches.
  • Experience in programming either with a high-level (e.g. Python) or low-level (Fortran/C++) language is highly desirable.
  • Collaborative spirit, teamwork, and excellent English skills.

Your application

Please submit your application via our online application portal as soon as possible but latest by August 31st, 2023 including the following documents:

  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum vitae including
  • Names and email addresses of three references

The successful candidates are expected to start between October 1st, and December 1st, 2023.
