With about 30 scientific departments and research groups and about 800 employees, the MPIB is one of the largest institutes of the Max Planck Society.

The Department of Machine Learning and Systems Biology headed by director Prof. Dr. Karsten Borgwardt is seeking a PhD student (m/f/d).

Scientists in the Department of Machine Learning and Systems Biology develop and apply novel machine learning algorithms to detect patterns and statistical dependencies in large datasets from biology and medicine. Machine learning on graphs, machine learning in medicine and machine learning in protein research are current and future foci of the department. We seek a highly motivated doctoral student (m/f/d) to join an enthusiastic and collaborative team in an outstanding scientific environment.

Your qualifications

The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree or similar qualification in bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics, or related fields. He/she should be motivated to  develop new machine learning methods and/or to apply machine learning algorithms to solve problems in the life sciences. Written and oral command of the English language is essential.
